Adam Schlesinger: A Man for All (Awards) Seasons

You probably know Adam Schlesinger best as the bassist-songwriter for alt-popsters Fountains of Wayne.

Or perhaps you know him as a member of the supergroup Tinted Windows – along with Cheap Trick’s Bun E. Carlos, Taylor Hanson of Hanson and ex-Smashing Pumpkin James Iha – who released their debut album earlier this year.

But last week, Schlesinger also received an Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Original Music And Lyrics category for the song “Much Worse Things,” a duet performed by Stephen Colbert and Elvis Costello on Comedy Central’s holiday special “A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift Of All!” All the songs for the special were co-written by Schlesinger and David Javerbaum, executive producer of “The Daily Show.”

That is, of course, quite an honor – and this is Schlesinger’s first Emmy nomination. But consider that he has already previously received nominations for Oscar, Tony, Grammy and Golden Globe awards.

He received a Tony nomination for Best Original Score for the Broadway show “Cry-Baby.” His title song for Tom Hanks’ film “That Thing You Do” received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Original Song. And Fountains Of Wayne received two Grammy nominations for their album, “Welcome Interstate Managers.”

So, what do you do for an encore after all of that? Well, how about actually winning one of those awards, Adam?
