Nikki Sixx: 22 years ago today

OK, we all know where Nikki Sixx will be tonight – pounding on his bass in the spotlight at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, as Motley Crue thrashes away at “Girls, Girls, Girls” and other fave metalhead anthems.

But where was he 22 years ago, and what was he doing?

Well, let’s crack open that volume of classic rock and roll literature, “The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star,” published by MTV Books/Pocket Books – in hardcover! – in 2007, and see what Mr. Sixx was up to:

“September 1, 1987
Coliseum, Richmond, VA
Backstage, 7:55pm

Just got a massage. My body is torn up, my hands are cut up and bruised, all part of trying to break your bass at every turn of a chorus. I have my bass strings so high so I don’t fret them out. Mick says playing my bass is like playing a telephone pole with high-tension live wires on.

On that note – time to crack the whisky and go make a mess of the youth of Richmond’s minds.”

Thanks for sharing, Nikki.

Nikki Sixx and the rest of Motley Crue headline Crue Fest 2, which rolls into the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs today. Gates open at 4pm with music slated to start on the second stage at 4:15pm. Other bands on the tour include Godsmack, Theory of a Deadman, Drowning Pool and Charm City Devils.
