Peter Buck, What Was the First Album You Ever Bought?

“Well, the first single that I ever bought was ‘She Loves You’ by the Beatles. That was when it first came out, too, and I was like six years old or something.

“The first album I ever bought? Albums were for adults in those days. I think I bought one when I was ten, but I can’t remember. I know that I got that Rolling Stones live record, ‘Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out,’ and that must have been very close to the first album that I bought.

“But I had a cousin who was a little bit older who gave me a lot of her old albums by Jefferson Airplane and Simon & Garfunkel when I was like 11 years old.

“It wasn’t until I was about 12 years old that I was purchasing albums regularly, but I bought singles before that. I had one of those old kiddie turntables, and I’m not even sure that it went to 33 1/3 RPM speed.”

R.E.M. guitarist and co-founder Peter Buck will be rolling into Valentine’s Music Hall in Albany with his other band – the Minus 5 – on Monday, September 21.
