Indie popsters Elizabeth & The Catapult rolled into Troy on Friday afternoon to play outdoors under the Student Pavilion canopy at Hudson Valley Community College. Led by singer-keyboardist Elizabeth Ziman, the quartet launched a matinee performance drawn primarily from the band’s recently released debut album, “Taller Children,” on the Verve/Forecast label.

Fighting off the chill in the air with her head wrapped in a shawl, Elizabeth sat at the electric piano looking more like a visiting Persian princess than a product of NYC’s Lower East Side club scene.

Singing a mix of pop, classic rock and jazzy soul, she bantered amiably with the audience between songs, while waves of smoke from a nearby outdoor grill cooking chicken wafted across the campus and past the band. Ending the set with a big smile, Elizabeth declared that she was feeling curiously hungry as her band mates nodded approvingly.

So, when can we hear this, Chris?

Thanks go out to astute Nippertown reader Christine Khaikin, who has graciously supplied us with the name of the mystery bassist – Emeen Zarookian. Let’s have a big hand for Emeen…and for Christine, too.
