Real Good for Free: Silent Film Spectacular
It’s October, which means that once again it’s time for the Albany Public Library‘s annual “Silent Film Spectacular” series – classic silent films accompanied by new, original film scores written and performed live by some of Nippertown’s most adventurous local musicians.
It all takes place in the large auditorium of the Main Library on Washington Ave. The presentations are, of course, open to the public, and there is no admission charge.
Here’s the schedule:
7pm on Wednesday, October 14: “The Lost World” with live, original music by Beware! The Other Head of Science
This 1925 silent film is an adaption of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s book about a land where prehistoric creatures roam. Beware! The Other Head of Science – featured performers at LarkFest last month – have composed a score to this dinosaur movie classic that’s sure to surprise.
7pm on Wednesday, October 21: “Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans” with live, original music by Todd Is New Each Moment and Dead Friend
A triple Oscar Award-winner, this 1927 film follows the dark, twisted tale of a married farmer who falls under the spell of a city woman who tries to convince him to kill his wife. Bryan Hamill and Thomas Wilk serve up a unique score on guitar and keyboard.
7pm on Wednesday, October 28: “The Unknown” with live, original music by Eric Halder (of the Ashley Pond Band)
Starring Lon Chaney and Joan Crawford as circus performers, this 1927 film spins a bizarre, macabre love story. Classically trained guitarist Eric Halder, who has been honored with awards from Albany’s Ed Wood Film Festival for his film scores, will use baritone guitar and analog effects to highlight the film’s sinister tone.
