Real Good for Free: Gary Giddins @ Schenectady County Community College, 10/22/09

jazzIt’s not music, but it’s all about music.

Author, educator and critic Gary Giddins just might be the best jazz writer alive today. The long-time columnist for The Village Voice has been honored with an unparalleled six ASCAP–Deems Taylor Awards, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Peabody Award in Broadcasting and a lifetime achievement award from the Jazz Journalists Association.

He’s written numerous books, including biographies of such jazz giants as Charlie Parker, Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong.

As part of the New York State Writers Institute series, Giddens makes a stop at Schenectady County Community College on Thursday, October 22 to read from his latest book, “Jazz” co-authored with Scott DeVeaux, and discuss jazz and jazz criticism.
