Real Good for Free: “The Man With the Golden Arm” & Discussion with Russell Banks & Don DeLillo @ Page Hall, 11/6/09
In celebration of the writings of author Nelson Algren, the New York State Writers Institute screens the 1955 film “The Man With the Golden Arm,” based on Algren’s novel. The gritty urban film about jazz and heroin was directed by Otto Preminger and stars Frank Sinatra as Frankie Machine, along with Eleanor Parker, Kim Novak and Arnold Stang. The film begins at 7pm Friday (November 6) at UAlbany’s Page Hall.
Yes, the movie’s cool enough all by itself to make this a worthwhile night out. But following the screening, two great American novelists Russell Banks and Don DeLillo will discuss the life and work of Algren and the influence that he had on their own work.
