There’s Always Room for Cello…

Cellos

Boy, this is gonna be one serious cello orgy.

Acclaimed cellist Matt Haimovitz is leading his eight-piece all-cello ensemble Uccello in two Nippertown concerts this weekend. You can catch them in action at the new Club Helsinki Hudson in Hudson on Saturday night, as well as at Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs on Sunday afternoon.

Haimovitz is one of the great free-thinking musicians of our time, and he may be the only cellist who’s played at both Carnegie Hall and CBGB’s.

So don’t expect to hear any Bach or the usual classical repertoire from Haimovitz and Uccello this weekend. The concerts will instead feature an assortment of jazz classics arranged by composer David Sanford.

Expect to hear “Blues in A Minor” (the Modern Jazz Quartet and John Lewis), “Open Country Joy” (John McLaughlin and Mahavishnu Orchestra), “W.R.U.” (Ornette Coleman), “Liza” (George Gershwin), “Blood Count” (Billy Strayhorn), “Haitian Fight Song” (Charles Mingus) and “Half Nelson” (Miles Davis).
