5/21/10: Today’s Tips: Friday
MUSIC: Jim Kweskin and Geoff Muldaur @ Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs. As members of the Jim Kweskin Jug Band they were a seminal part of the ’60s acoustic music movement. The band broke up after just a few short years, but Kweskin and Muldaur are back together again to celebrate the 50th anniversary of America’s oldest continuously operated coffeehouse. 7pm. $75 (includes beer, wine, more).
MUSIC: The SPAC Battle of the Bands @ the Spa Little Theatre at SPAC, Saratoga Springs. 10 bands. 1 grand prize. Heck, maybe they shoulda made this a cage match. 6pm. $15.
MUSIC: Peter Wolf @ The Egg. He hasn’t toured in eight years but you can tell that the J. Geils Band frontman is still in great musical shape just by giving a listen to his sharp new album, “Midnight Souvenirs.” Batten down the hatches, The Egg is gonna get scrambled tonight. 8pm. $34.50.
NOTE: The Bret Michaels concert that was originally slated to take place tonight at Northern Lights in Clifton Park has been postponed due to Michaels’ recent health problems. Stay tuned for a new re-scheduled date.
MUSIC: Gaia Roots @ Jae’s Spice, Pittsfield. The women’s world music percussion, vocal and dance ensemble is hosting a CD release party for their new “Mother Drum” – featuring an 11-piece ensemble performing folkloric Afro-Caribbean and West African percussion and drumming rhythms accompanied by vocal harmonies and traditional and contemporary dance. 9:30pm. $8.
MUSIC: Punk Rock Tribute Night II @ Valentine’s Music Hall, Albany. OK, here’s what you’re gonna get: Hot Cousin cranking out the Ramones. The all-star Kosmo Vinyl’s Army serving up the passion of the Clash. And the Goat Stingers digging back into the ’60s to channel the primal Kinks. 8pm.
THEATER: “A Doll’s House” @ Proctors, Schenectady. It’s opening night for the Classic Theater Guild’s production of the Henrik Ibsen’s classic proto-feminist play starring Stephanie Insogna as Nora. Through Sunday, May 30. 8pm. $16.50; seniors and students $13.50.
MUSIC: Marcy Playground @ Jillian’s, Albany. “I smell sex and candy here/Who’s that lounging in my chair/Who’s that casting devious stares in my direction/Mama, this surely is a dream/Mama, this surely is a dream/Yeah, mama, this must be my dream.” With Chris Dukes. 9pm.
