Be Here Now: Dona Oxford @ the Van Dyck, 6/18/10

Keyboardist-vocalist (and former Capital Region resident) Doña Oxford has played with some mighty high-profile musicians, including Keith Richards, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy, Hubert Sumlin, Son Seals, Shemekia Copeland, Jimmy Vivino, Popa Chubby and her musical idol, Johnnie Johnson. She’s recorded with the likes of Shemekia Copeland, performed on the soundtrack albums of Eddie Murphy’s “Norbit” and Martin Lawrence’s “Welcome Home, Roscoe Jenkins,” as well as recording three albums of her own, including the latest, “Step Up.”

But she hasn’t forgotten her roots. Here she is playing a groove-a-licious cover of “Fifteen and Gone” from the songbag of the mighty, mighty Nippertown soul stirrers, the Stomplistics. Stomp on!

Dona Oxford steps into the spotlight at the Van Dyck in Schenectady at 7pm tonight. Tix are $12. And if you ask her nicely, maybe she’ll play “Fifteen and Gone.”
