7/27/10: Today’s Tips: Tuesday

MUSIC: Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros @ Northern Lights, Clifton Park. A merry little band of music-makers from Los Angeles led by Alex Ebert (of Ima Robot) and Jade Castrinos. We Are Each Other (featuring Amnion’s Aaron Embry) opens the show. (Related story and video) 8pm. $15.

MUSIC: Spykes @ Upstate Artists Guild, Albany. The Albany Sonic Arts Collective embraces the adventurous with a solo performance by John Olson of Wolf Eyes (aka, Spykes). Also on the bill are Berlin’s Family Battle Snakes and local sound shakers Rambutan and Fossils from the Sun. 8pm. $5 suggested donation.

TALK: Joe Thompson @ Ferrin Gallery, Pittsfield. In conjunction with Barrington Stage Co.’s current production of “Art,” MASS MoCA director Thompson discusses modern art, conceptual art and, well, “Art.” 4pm. Free; reservations recommended.

MUSIC: SlackJaw @ Valentine’s Music Hall, Albany. Saratoga’s punk rock heroes Slackjaw wrap up their three-week, coast-to-coast US tour with a homecoming bash at Valentines. Joining in the festivities are California’s A Billion Ernies, Nashville’s Stuck Lucky and locals the Slaughterhouse Chorus. FILM: Crude @ Crandall Public Library, Glens Falls. A highly-acclaimed, award-winning documentary that examines the ongoing (18 years and counting) class action suit filed by 30,000 indigenous Ecuadorans against Chevron Oil for allegedly polluting the Amazon. Directed by Joe Berlinger, 2009. 6:30pm. FREE.

MUSIC: Laura Boggs @ Canajoharie Library, Canajoharie. Performances by the Rev Records singer-songwriter are all too rare, and this time around, she mixes it up a bit, singing kids songs, sing-alongs and a few family-friendly Boggs originals. 6pm. Free.
