9/22/10: Today’s Tips: Wednesday


MUSIC/PARTICIPATORY: Jerry Marotta @ UAlbany’s State Quad, Albany. Master drummer and A-list session musician Marotta has played with everyone from Peter Gabriel to Cher. Now it’s your turn. He’ll be setting up his drum kit and inviting folks to play along with him in an open percussion jam session. Bring your own bongos, if you’ve got ’em. (Related story: Preview) 3pm. FREE.

FILM/DISCUSSION: “Encounters at the End of the World” @ UAlbany’s Page Hall, Albany. The New York State Writers Institute kicks off its season with a screening of Werner Herzog’s 2007 documentary mediation on life in Antarctica. There will be a discussion and Q&A session with Henry Kaiser (the film’s producer, underwater photographer and soundtrack composer) and Samuel Bowser (research scientist from the Wadsworth Center of the NYS Department of Health), who is featured in the film. MUSIC: Annie & the Hedonists @ Tricentennial Park, Albany. The September in the City Arts Fair rolls on, this time featuring one of Nippertown’s most eclectic and accomplished roots bands, who swing from folk to jazz to blues and beyond. 11:30am. FREE. MUSIC: Bret Michaels @ Northern Lights, Clifton Park. It’s been an eventful year for the Poison frontman – an emergency appendectomy, a massive brain hemorrhage and a season with Donald Trump on “The Celebrity Apprentice 3,” on which he emerged as the winner.     The September in the City Art Fair has been canceled today due to the threat of thunderstorms. The art fair will return next week with live jazz from the Sean & Shaun Trio. Annie & The Hedonists will be rescheduled next year.
