Flashback: The Penny Knight Band, 1984

This week we’re digging deep into the vaults of “Real George’s Backroom,” Albany’s fabulous ’80s vintage cable television music show, for another blast from the past – the Penny Knight Band.

Led by singer-drummer Penny Knight, here the band kicks out a pair of tunes – “He’s a Faker” and “Jump Start My Heart” – that Real George captured live in 1984 at Easter Seals’ Parties in the Park. The free concerts were held in Albany’s West Capitol Park every Wednesday throughout the summer months:

But WAIT, here’s the best news…

After a hiatus of just 25 years, the Penny Knight Band is roaring back into action with a handful of reunion shows in Nippertown next week.

Welcome back, PKB!

You can catch them in action at Savannah’s in Albany at 8pm on Wednesday, November 10, sharing the bill with the Ameros and Sentient Machine. Admission is free.

They’ll also be taking the stage at Eccentric Studio in Ravena at 9pm on Friday, November 12. Jen Lowe opens the show.

And the Penny Knight Band will wrap up their reunion week with a performance at the benefit concert for Nippertown keyboardist-producer Tony Perrino that’s being held at Jay’s Bar & Grill in Ballston Spa from 3-8pm on Sunday, November 14. Other bands slated to performance at the very special show include Blue Hand Luke, Jocamo, Killer B, Loose Cannons, Mantraz, E.B. Jebb, Gary Brooks, Johnny Rabb, the Refrigerators and more. Suggested donation at the door is $10.

    I smell Label-mates!

  2. LiLi says

I wanna go back to the 80’s…

So, there was some Blotto footage in the beginning of that video, is there more?

That’s where I first saw Blotto. Okay, actually, where I first met Blotto.

I first saw them at the Empire State Plaza during some festival in September of 1980, but we didn’t stay long because I was on crutches and there was no place to sit.

    Awesome stuff, keep’em coming!

Who knew this even existed ?!? Thanks to Nippertown.com for the kind words and support, and for unearthing this dose of nostalgia, and “Real George’s Backroom” for capturing, what was to be, nostalgia.

Apparently, we were either overly-excited to play this show or the vid soundtrack is running fast because the songs were performed at 2X-3X tempo. Reminds me of the scene in “Reefer Madness” where the guy smoking the evil weed is sitting next to the piano player maniacally screaming “faster, faster!”

Hope to see everyone at our shows on Nov 10, 12 and 14 (and 11/11 … if you are inspired enough to mount a road trip to Manchester CT). The Penny Knight Band (2010) will endeavor to play these and other of our tunes at less of a dangerously breakneck pace…we promise 🙂

Many thanks to the Capital District for the years of support … for more info, check our “Future Attempts at Stardom’ at http://pennyknightband.blogspot.com/p/upcoming-attempts-at-stardom.html
