World Premiere of “Flute Poetic” @ Skidmore, 11/13/10
Flutist Jan Vinci and pianist Pola Baytelman – senior artists-in-residence at Skidmore College – will perform the world premiere of acclaimed composer Jennifer Higdon’s new work, a three-movement duet titled “Flute Poetic,” at 8pm on Saturday at Skidmore’s Zankel Music Center in Saratoga Springs.
2010 has been a remarkable year for Higdon. In January, she won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Classical Composition for her “Percussion Concerto.” And just a few months later, the 47-year-old composer received the 2010 Pulitzer Prize in Music for her “Violin Concerto.”
Hignon will be in attendance on Saturday, participating in a pre-performance Q&A session beginning at 7 p.m.
In addition to the premier of “Flute Poetic,” the concert program on Saturday evening will also feature classical and contemporary music by faculty members Anne Zwick Turner (soprano), Richard Hihn (piano), Michael Emery (violin), Joel Brown (guitar), Ann Alton (cello), Evan Mack (piano), John Nazarenko (piano) and Mark Vinci (alto saxophone), who will present the premiere of his own composition, “Hey!!”
Admission to Saturday’s concert is free, but tix are required. Go here to reserve free tix.
