Media Watch: The Parnas Sisters in The New York Times
It’s a cliche to say that talent is often under-appreciated in its hometown. But of course, every cliche starts with a grain of truth…
Take, for example the Parnas/Kohlberg Trio. Along with pianist Yaron Kohlberg, the trio also features sisters Madalyn Parnas (violin) and Cicely Parnas (cello), both of whom attended the College of St. Rose and played in the local chamber pop band Eric Margan & the Red Lions, in addition to pursuing their classical careers.
Interestingly enough, when the Parnas/Kohlberg Trio performed at the College’s of St. Rose’s Massry Center in Albany on Sunday, November 21, none of the Capital Region newspapers reviewed the performance.
Three days later, however, the trio performed in NYC at Greenwich Village nightclub Le Poisson Rouge – an edgy nightclub/gallery whose calendar features upcoming performances by Badly Drawn Boy, Lykke Li, Thurston Moore, Nels Cline, Meredith Monk and the ReBirth Brass Band – and Allan Kozinn wrote a very positive review, which was published in Friday’s issue of The New York Times. And not only did The Times send a reviewer to the performance, but they sent a photographer as well.
