Rufus Wainwright, What Was the First Album You Ever Bought?
“I was really into Al Jolson when I was a little kid. And the Everly Brothers. And then I got into opera when I was really young – probably about 14 years old.
But I think that the first album that I went out and actually bought was Men Without Hats. They were from Canada, you know.
It was either that or the disco version of the ‘Star Wars’ theme – you know, one of those really weird disco albums.”
Singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright heads into The Egg in Albany at 7:30pm on Thursday in support of his latest album, “All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu.” Tix are $34.50, $39.50 and $49.50.
I believe he’s referring to the LP “Star Wars and Other Galactic Funk” by Meco. The album was actually nominated for a Grammy for “Best Instrumental Pop performer” in 1977. Thank goodness John Williams’ original soundtrack recording won instead.
