1/7/11: Today’s Tips: Friday

MUSIC: The Frank Vignola Trio @ the Eighth Step at Proctors, Schenectady. Django-style swinging by one of the world’s foremost Gypsy jazz guitarists. Vignola will be joined by guitarist Vinny Raniolo and bassist Gary Mazzaroppi. 7:30pm. $24.

MUSIC: Tern Rounders @ Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, Troy. Kim Kilby leads the alt-country combo. 10pm. FREE.

FILM: Marwencol @ Time + Space Limited, Hudson. A documentary detailing the story of Marwencol, a 1/6th scale World War II-era town that Mark Hogancamp created after he was literally beaten to death in a Kingston NY bar and revived by medics. Unable to afford therapy for the brain damage he incurred, he created a fictional town and populated it with dolls representing his friends, family and even his attackers. Over time he began to document the mini-dramas of his characters with a camera and his alter-ego Captain Hogancamp became their hero. 2010, 83 minutes. $5 | $7 (Also Saturday, 1/8, Friday, 1/14 and Saturday 1/15).

MUSIC: Skip Parsons’ Riverboat Jazz Band @ the Fountain, Albany. This is what we call a serious residency. Since starting in January, 1971, clarinetist Parsons and his New Orleans-style traditional jazz band have been playing one weekend a month at the Fountain – every month for 40 years. Now that’s something to celebrate! 10pm. (Also on Saturday.)

MUSIC: The I/O Fest @ Williams College’s ’62 Center, Williamstown. Day two of the three-day fest of new and adventurous music features the I/O Ensemble performing works by Nick Brooke, Chaya Czernowin, David Kechley, György Kurtág and Eric Wubbels. 8pm. FREE.

MUSIC: The Smulyan-Lalama Quartet @ Professor Java’s Coffee Sanctuary, Colonie. Baritone sax master Gary Smulyan teams up with tenor saxman Ralph Lalama, bassist Lou Smaldone and drummer Joe Barna for an evening of high-flying jazz. 7:30pm. (Also on Saturday)
