2/20/11: Today’s Tips: Sunday
MUSIC: Flogging Molly @ Northern Lights, Clifton Park. Dave King and merry band of Celtic rockers offer a preview of their upcoming studio album, “Speed of Darkness,” slated for release in late May. With Moneybrother and the Drowning Men. 7:30pm. SOLD OUT.
FESTIVAL/DANCE/MUSIC: Dance Flurry Festival @ various locations, Saratoga Springs. A lot of folks miss out on one of the best fests around because they think it’s all about dance. Au contraire. There’s more music here – really good music – than you can possibly soak up, and you don’t have to kick up your heels to hear it. Of course, right about now, we use use a bit of exercise, too, and dancing is one of the most fun ways to shake off the winter doldrums. 9am.
MUSIC: The Loom @ Valentine’s Music Hall, Albany. The Brooklyn sextet cranks up their chamber-folk sound. With Sgt. Dunbar & the Hobo Banned, Life Among the Trees and the Wailing Wall.
OPERA ON FILM: “Nixon in China” @ Time + Space Limited, Hudson. The Metropolitan Opera’s current production of John Adams’ groundbreaking 1987 opera. Conducted by Adams. 1pm. $25; 13 and under $15.
MUSIC: The Adirondack Saxophone Quartet @ Schenectady County Public Library, Schenectady. The Beat the Snow Winter Concert Series continues as Linden Gregory, James Corigliano, Brett Wery and Nathaniel Fossner blow their horns. 2:30pm. FREE.
MUSIC: Los Straitjackets @ the Iron Horse Music Hall, Northampton. Eddie Angel leads the masked twangmasters for an evening of whammy-bar rock ‘n’ roll – instrumentally. Cowabunga! With Sarah Borges opening the show with a solo set. 7pm. $15 in advance; $20 at the door.
BUBBLES: “BubbleMania!” @ the Colonial Theatre, Pittsfield. Bubble artist extraordinaire Casey Carle’s fun-for-the-whole-family performance is loaded with visual comedy, quick wit, big band swing music and the untamed, often unbelievable beauty of bubbles. 2pm. $15.
MUSIC: Charmboy @ Trick Shots Billiards, Clifton Park. The indie rock trio offers a sneak preview of their upcoming album. With Out to Bring Us Down and Moonshine Blues. 7:30pm. $5.
MUSIC: Magpie @ Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs. The dynamic folk/activist duo of Greg Artzner and Terry Leonino. 7pm. $15 in advance; $17 at the door; $3 discount with Dance Flurry wristband.
