3/20/11: Today’s Tips: Sunday
MUSIC: The Jeff Coffin Mu’tet @ the College of St. Rose’s Massry Center, Albany. The longtime saxman with Bela Fleck & the Flecktones now plays with the Dave Matthews Band, but tonight he leads his own combo featuring drummer Jeff “Apt. Q-258” Sipe, keyboardist-flutist Kofi Burbridge, trumpeter Bill Fanning and bassist Felix Pastorius. 7:30pm. $15.
MUSIC/FUNDRAISER: “Kure for Kristen” @ the Parting Glass, Saratoga Springs. You might think that Sunday would be a day of rest at the Glass, which has partied hearty in the past week for St. Patrick’s Day, as well as the pub’s own 30th anniversary. But the Glass is always open for those in need, and “Kure for Kristen” is a benefit event for a Division Street Elementary School third grader who has been diagnosed with bone cancer. Music by Rich Ortiz, Mike Steiner, Becky Walton, Big Medicine, Gravity and Four. Also a silent auction. 3-8pm. $10.
FILM/DISCUSSION: “Nostalgia for the Light” @ Sanctuary for Independent Media, Troy. A multi-faceted documentary about the Atacama Desert, where the sky is so translucent that it allows astronomers to see right to the boundaries of the universe. It’s also a place where the harsh heat of the sun keeps human remains intact, including political prisoners disappeared by the Chilean army. Followed by a discussion with the director, award-winning Chilean filmmaker Patricio Guzman. 7pm. $10 suggested donation; students & low income $5.
MUSIC: Hair of the Dog @ the Hudson River Music Hall, Hudson Falls. No St. Patrick’s Day hangover for you. Try a little Hair of the Dog… 2pm. $12.50, $15; students $8.
MUSIC: “Sisters in Song” @ the Recital Hall at UAlbany’s Performing Arts Center, Albany. Sisters Kala Maxym (soprano) and Kara Cornell (mezzo-soprano) present a celebration of friendship and sisterhood with duets from opera and art song from Rossini, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Dvorak, Mozart, Puccini, Delibes and Bernstein. 4pm. $8; students and seniors $4.
COMEDY: Bo Burnham @ The Egg, Albany. Three years ago, he was just another high-schooler recording YouTube videos for fun. Now, Bo has burst onto the comedy scene with a CD, a DVD, a Comedy Central special and a deal to write a film for Judd Apatow. 7:30pm. $22.50, $26.50.

THEATER: “Delphine Ryan” @ the East Greenbush Community Library, East Greenbush. Directed by Barry Streifert, the Spotlight Players offer a staged reading of the new murder mystery play by local playwright Diane Doring. 2pm. FREE.
