4/12/11: Today’s Tips: Tuesday

MUSIC: Empire Jazz Orchestra @ Schenectady County Communiy College’s Carl B. Taylor Auditorium, Schenectady. Under the direction of Dr. William Meckley, the big band jazz ensemble teams up with special guest saxophone legend Lee Konitz. 8pm. $20; students $6.

THEATER: Blue Man Group @ Proctors, Schenectady. They’re mute. They’re bald. They’re blue. After serving up their big “Rock Show” at arenas and amphitheaters in recent years, BMG re-groups with a more intimate theater-sized performance art production. Smart and fun, which is not an easy combination. 8pm. $20, $30, $40, $60, $75. (Through Sunday.)

FILM: “Neither Memory Nor Magic” @ Sage College of Albany’s Opalka Gallery, Albany. The world premiere of award-winning director Hugo Perez’s documentary about the acclaimed Hungarian poet Miklós Radnóti. Presented by the Center for Documentary Arts, the evening will conclude with a post-screening discussion with the director. 6:30pm. $5.

MUSIC: Americana Tuesdays @ Valentine’s Music Hall, Albany. Host band Dan Johnson & His Expert Sidemen welcome Brooklyn’s experimental country ‘n’ blues collective the Woes. 8pm. $5.

MUSIC: Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt! @ the College of St. Rose’s Jack’s Place, Albany. Currently readying their sophomore album for David Byrne’s Luka Bop label, the revolving band of musical party-throwers have been hailed as “the performance art party band to end all performance art party bands” by Paper Magazine. With Rich Aucoin. 8pm. $7.

TALK: “Blue Morph and Self Organized Criticality” @ RPI’s Biotech Auditorium, Troy. Media artist Victoria Vesna and nanoscientist Jim Gimzewski discuss their art/science project that uses nano-scale images and sounds derived from the metamorphosis of a chrysalis into a butterfly as the overarching metaphor for the collective shift in consciousness. 7pm. FREE.

MUSIC: Blood Stereo @ the Upstate Artists Guild, Albany. Another evening of experimental music sponsored by the Albany Sonic Arts Collective, headlined by the British duo of Dylan Nyoukis and Karen Constance, who combine DIY technology and the human voice. Also on the bill are Northampton’s Bill Nace and Albany’s own 1983 (aka Jason Cosco). 8pm. $5 suggested donation.

MUSIC: Steve Aoki @ the Washington Avenue Armory, Albany. The DJ-producer-recording artist-fashion designer rolls into town in support of “Wake Up Call: Remixes.” With DJ Capital and B. Martin. 9pm. $25, $30, $35.

READING: Rosanna Warren @ Room 375 of UAlbany’s Campus Center, Albany. Sponsored by the New York State Writers Institute, the award-winning poet will read from her most recent collection, “Ghost in a Red Hat.” 8pm. FREE.
