The Joe Krown Trio

It’s gettin’ mighty funky in here!

Making their Nippertown debut at Red Square in Albany on Tuesday night, the Joe Krown Trio is an all-star meeting of the musical minds, New Orleans style. Carrying on the traditional Crescent City recipe for an oh-so-tasty blues-jazz-R&B-funk gumbo, the three members of the band each bring along a deep, rich resume of their own.

Joe Krown (keyboards): In addition to numerous albums as a solo performer – as well as the leader of the Joe Krown Organ Combo – Krown was also the keyboardist in Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown’s band Gate’s Express for more than a dozen years until Brown’s death in 2005.

Russell Batiste, Jr. (drums): From one of the Big Easy’s most respected musical families, Batiste joined the Funky Meters back in 1989, but over the years, he’s also played with a diverse array of musicians from Harry Connick Jr. to Maceo Parker, from Champion Jack DuPree to Robbie Robertson. In addition, he’s also one of the founding members of the all-star Porter Batiste Stoltz.

Walter “Wolfman” Washington (guitar/vocals): Certainly no stranger to Nippertown music fans, the Wolfman and his band, the Roadmasters, made frequent Albany stops back in the heyday of Pauly’s Hotel. In addition, the guitarslinger has done stints with such legendary vocalists as Lee Dorsey, Irma Thomas and the great Johnny Adams.

Yeah, this is gonna be a good one.

The Joe Krown Trio lays it down at Red Square in Albany on Tuesday (May 24). Funk band Pungee opens the show. Doors open at 8pm; music begins at 9pm. Admission is $8 in advance; $12 at the door.
