Festival Fever: Rensselaerville Festival of Writers, 7/28-31/11

The Rensselaerville Library is sponsoring the annual Rensselaerville Festival of Writers this weekend, and the theme of the fest is “A Sense of Place.”

The fest features readings, book signings and workshops with an A-list of acclaimed authors, including Verlyn Klinkenborg (New York Times columnist and author of “Making Hay”), Nick Flynn (whose novel “Another Bullshit Night in Suck City” is being made into a film starring Robert DeNiro and Julianne Moore), Francine Prose (author of 16 works of fiction and The New York Times best-seller “Reading Like a Writer”), Jean Craighead George (Newbury Award-winning author of the survival classic “My Side of the Mountain”) and Mary Morris (author of “Revenge” and “The River Queen”).

Additional writers participating in the fest include Helen Benedict, Maria Tucci, Suzannah Lessard, Howard Nelson, Stephen O’Connor, Donna Schaper, Mary Tannen, Roderick & Wyatt Townley, Twig George, Barry Kuhar, Timothy Cahill and (via video) Andy Rooney.

The festival begins on Thursday and runs through Sunday. Among the additional activities at the fest are a screening of the film “My Side of the Mountain” (7pm on Thursday), the acclaimed photography exhibition “Battlesight: Dispatches from Iraq and Afghanistan” (with an opening reception from 5-7pm on Thursday and a talk by curator Timothy Cahill at 11:30am on Saturday), a staged reading of selections from “My Side of the Mountain” at 4pm on Saturday) and children’s programs at 11am & 2pm on Saturday). In addition, there will be a book sale, a gala cocktail party with the authors and other festive food events at the Palmer House

A four-day package ticket for the fest is $75, while tickets for individual events during the fest range from free to $50. All proceeds will benefit the Rensselaerville Library.
