ArtBeat: Flyin’ High with Flyer Squad
You may have seen the posters. Over the past several years, Flyer Squad has been cranking out gig posters for a variety of punks (Bad Religion, Bouncing Souls), hardcore bands (Agnostic Front, Murphy’s Law) and twangmasters (Hank Williams III, the Blasters).
As it turns out, however, Flyer Squad isn’t really a squad at all. Instead, it’s a one-woman art-printing army and die-hard music fan named Beth Mickalonis of Troy.
She got her start making “crappy, but hilarious” photocopied fliers for local punk shows, according to her own evaluation, but she had a revelation in 2005, deciding that it was time to expand her artistic possibilities well beyond the usual 8 1/2 x 11-inch B&W Xeroxed work. So she took up silk-screening and embraced a rainbow’s worth of vibrant colors.
She became Flyer Squad, and to date she’s created more than 50 handmade, hand-cut posters adhering strictly to the motto, “Hand Made Quality Shit.”
Mickalonis has been working extra hard recently, as she prepares for her upcoming one-woman show at Dead Presidents Lounge in Albany. The exhibit will feature quite a bit of her new silk-screened work, in addition to some photography and mixed-media artwork as well. The exhibit opens on Friday (August 5) with a reception from 6-9pm.
Following the reception, the action shifts to Valentine’s Music Hall in Albany for the official after-party featuring Plastic Jesus, the Jetty Boys, the Slaughterhouse Chorus and the Spins. Start time is 9pm, and admission is $5.
And if you can’t make to the Dead Presidents Lounge, you can still check out (and purchase for dirt cheap prices) Flyer Squad art at her Etsy site.
