8/10/11: Today’s Tips: Wednesday


MUSIC: Branford Marsalis and The Philadelphia Orchestra @ Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Saratoga Springs. The finale week of the orchestra’s three-week summer residency kicks off with a bang, as virtuoso saxman Marsalis steps into the spotlight. Giancarlo Guerrero conducts Debussy’s “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun,” Bizet’s “Suite from Carmen,” Williams’ “Escapades for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra,” Milhaud’s “Scaramouche Suite for Saxophone and Orchestra” and Ravel’s “Bolero” and “Rapsodie Espagnole.” 8pm. $31, $41.50, $49.50, $65.50, $72.50; lawn $20. MUSIC: Chatham County Line @ Shepard Park, Lake George. The North Carolina-based band churns out a fusion of bluegrass and singer-songwriter styles, showcasing their new album, “Wildwood.” (Read our CD review.) 7:30pm. FREE.

MUSIC: Ruth Pelham @ Central Park’s Music Haven, Schenectady. The Pied Piper of Nippertown – and we mean that in the best possible way – brings her brand new Music Mobile van to the Electric City to make music with the kids. 10am. FREE.

MUSIC: Blues for Breakfast @ Hedley District Riverfront, Troy. Last week’s Rockin’ On the River featured a Talking Heads tribute band; this time it’s a Grateful Dead tribute band. 5pm. FREE.

DANCE: Jacob’s Pillow, Becket. At the Ted Shawn Theatre, the Trisha Brown Dance Company celebrates its 40th anniversary with a program that includes “Set and Reset,” with stage set and costumes by Robert Rauschenberg and music by Laurie Anderson. 8pm. $59.50-64.50. At the Doris Duke Theatre, Jodi Melnick and David Neumann, two of today’s smartest and most creative choreographers, offer a mixed bill that includes the world premiere of a new duet, “July.” 8:15pm. $23.50-37.50. MUSIC: Taina Asili y la Banda Rebelde @ Hudson Riverfront Park, Hudson. Vocalist Asili and her groove-conscious band present a fusion of Afro-Caribbean, reggae, rock, and hip hop sounds in the latest installment of the Hudson.Water.Music. concert series.
