LIVE: The Sam Bush Band @ The Egg, 11/20/11
Fiddler, vocalist and mandolinist extraordinaire Sam Bush set the bar high with his pioneering, genre-busting work with the New Grass Revival all those years ago, but he continues to astonish with his own band, featuring bassist Todd Parks, drummer Chris Brown, guitarist Stephen Mougin and fleet-fingered banjo man Scott Vestal.
Bush and his current crew can play straight-up bluegrass when they want to – as they proved with the opening “On the Road” and “Bluegrass Train” at The Egg – but they clearly enjoy pushing the musical envelope, as they did with high-flying fusion jams on “The Mahavishnu Mountain Boys,” the dizzying time-signature-shifting “Laps in Seven” and jazz violinist Jean-Luc Ponty’s “New Country.”
Yes, after all these years, Bush is still a free-wheeling musical omnivore…

Excerpt from Michael Hochanadel’s review at The Daily Gazette: “A virtuoso by any measure, Bush also entertained with engaging jokes, goofs and cheerful encouragement to his bandmates. More than just solid pros, they responded when he pulled them into either furious riffing or silliness. For all their relaxed ease — Sunday’s show was their last this year — they were absolutely all-business as a razor sharp ensemble and a crew of outrageously gifted soloists.”
