Lookin’ for Adventure: Music from Off the Beaten Path…

If you’re looking for a dose of left-of-center, out-of-the-box, experimental music this weekend, you’ve got three glorious, high-profile opportunities around town this weekend:

$18 in advance; $20 at the door
Last year’s break-up of Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon – longtime King & Queen of the Indie Rock Prom – has thrust Sonic Youth into an indefinite hiatus. But that also means that the bandmembers are likely to roll through town more often. Moore leads the parade with his band on Friday night in support of his surprisingly mellow 2011 solo album of psychedelic chamber-folk, “Demolished Thoughts,” produced by Beck. NOTE: Stay tuned for Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley (with Disappears) and Lee Renaldo to follow-up with a co-headline show at Valentine’s Music Hall in Albany on Wednesday, April 18. See Thurston Moore’s First Album.

@ Proctors’ GE Theatre, Schenectady
Saturday, January 29, 7:30pm
Melding together the sounds and spirits of such post-modern pioneers as Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Sun Ra, Parliament Funkadelic and the Art Ensemble of Chicago, bassist Jared Michael Nickerson and conductionist Greg Tate lead the sprawling army of neo-futurist funkateers on a fearless musical journey through the uncharted waters of wild abandon and group improvisation in support of the NYC-based band’s 11th studio album, “All Ya Needs That Negrocity.” See Interview with Greg Tate and Jared Michael Nickerson’s Five Firsts.

Featuring Century Plants, soundBarn, Matt Weston, Holland Hobson, Insect Posse, Pete Edwards, more
@ Upstate Artists Guild, Albany

A benefit concert for the financially struggling UAG features a all-star line-up of experimental musicians and sonic explorers. Century Plants will perform Spacemen 3’s “Dreamweapon” in its entirety. Continents – featuring Jason Cosco and Asa Morris – will make their debut performance. The gallery windows will be transformed into loudspeakers by Holland Hopson. With additional performances by Nonhorse, Parashi, Jefferson Pitcher, Shape Shifting Shepherds and various special guests.
