UAlbany’s college radio station WCDB (90.9FM) started broadcasting on March 1, 1978, cranking up “Born to Run” by New Jersey rock-poet laureate Bruce Springsteen. So it seems only natural that the WDBC folks would snag the next generation of New Jersey’s favorite sons, Titus Andronicus, to headline their anniversary bash this weekend.

(Full disclosure: Some of us are actually old enough to remember earlier days when the station was known as WSUA AM and available only on campus via carrier current. However, in order to protect the guilty, we will not reveal any names…)

Yes, in celebration of the radio station’s 34th anniversary, WCDB-FM is hosting a massive, two-night rock fest at Valentine’s Music Hall in Albany this weekend. The fab festivities kickoff at 5pm on both Friday and Saturday nights. The live music kicks in at 6pm and continues non-stop upstairs and downstairs til the wee hours of the morning on both nights. You can catch a total of seven bands each night, and many of the bands feature current or former WCDB personnel in their line-ups.

Making the most of their Friday night headlining slot, Barons in the Attic will also be utilizing the bash as a CD release party for their brand spankin’ new disc “Turn It Off & Take Out the Battery.” Sharing the stages with them on Friday are Sub Pop’s Avi Buffalo, the Parlor (formerly We Are Jeneric), Around the World and Back, the reunion of the Hanslick Rebellion, Slaughterhouse Chorus and If Madrid.

In addition to headliners Titus Andronicus, the Saturday night line-up features Sgt. Dunbar & the Hobo Banned, Brian Dewan, the fabulous Boston-based power trio the Neighborhoos, Ramblin Jug Stompers, Secret Release and Matthew Carefully.

The two-night fest will also feature plenty of other party fun including raffles, alumni spinning music between band sets, a live remote broadcast and giveaways of music, t-shirts and concert tickets.

My friend Larry Kwolek designed the WCDB logo for a contest. The last I knew they were still using it, but I just checked the website and it has changed, but sort of a similar idea with the letters forming a shape that surrounds them. This looks like a fun event.

wait, what? the neighbourhoods are coming all the way from Boston and are only playing 45 minutes between 8.15 and 9?? Someone needs to book these guys a late night night two-set three hour gig somewhere else to do them (and their legacy) justice.

  4. Ann Mullaly says
