The Mahaiwe Presents the Incredibly Beautiful MOMIX Botanica [Berkshire on Stage]

Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center will present MOMIX on Friday, July 6 and Saturday, July 7 at 8:00pm. This innovative dance company, based in Washington, Conn., seemingly defies categorization as easily as its dancer-illusionists defy gravity. Director Moses Pendleton’s most recent work Botanica is an evening-length journey through the seasons, blending movement, circus, athleticism, and magical effects.
Botanica may be MOMIX’s most ambitious multimedia work to date. Its eclectic score, ranging from birdsong to Vivaldi, reveals nature’s changing imagery. Creatures real and mythical materialize thanks to dazzling projections, strobes, wind machines, larger-than-life puppets designed by Michael Curry, the Tony Award-winning designer of The Lion King, and-most of all-the company’s impossibly nimble performers.
Artistic Director Moses Pendleton has been one of America’s most innovative choreographers and directors for over 40 years. He was a founding member of the ground-breaking Pilobolus Dance Theater in 1971 before starting MOMIX. Pendleton toured with Pilobolus through the 1970s and began working outside of the group, performing and choreographing several works, including the Closing Ceremonies of the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid.
