ART/FUNDRAISER: Art for Animalkind @ the Red Dot, Hudson. Animalkind cat shelter in Hudson is in dire need after their facility suffered serious fire and water damage earlier this year. Please help out if you can, and take home some new art to hang on your walls while you’re at it. 6pm.

MUSIC: Empire Jazz Orchestra @ Schenectady County Community College’s Taylor Auditorium, Schenectady. The big band celebrates its 20th anniversary with a concert tonight featuring the music of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Charles Mingus, Gil Evans and more. 8pm. $20; students $6.

MUSIC: “An Evening of Jazz, Blues, Rhythm & Moves” @ The Egg, Albany. Featuring the soul-infused R&B of the Brawner Brothers, composer-pianist Daniel Kelly, the gospel-inspired jazz of the Don Byron New Gospel Quintet, the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company, jazz guitarist Julian Lage and contemporary dance company Kyle Abraham.In.Motion. 8pm. FREE.

READING/PERFORMANCE: Nitty Gritty Poetry Slam @ Valentine’s Music Hall, Albany. The every-other-Tuesday poetry reading and slam welcomes East Berne native Meg Waldron for a homecoming appearance, and she’s bringing along Robyn Bateman, too. With such poems as “My Ex Girlfriend Is Baking Cookies in My Uterus” (Waldron) and “Porn Star Apocalypse” (Bateman), it sounds like we’re in for an extra-fun night of wordsmithing. Sign-up at 7pm; open mic at 7:30pm; slam at 8pm. $5; students $3.

OPERA ON FILM: “L’Italiana in Algeri” @ Proctors, Schenectady. Performed by Opera Teatro Comunale di Bologna. 2 & 7pm. $20; ages 17 & under $16.

READING: Ghassan Zaqtan @ UAlbany Campus Center Room 375, Albany. The acclaimed Palestinian poet reads with Palestinian-American poet-translator Fady Joudah. 7pm. FREE. Also a free seminar at the same venue at 4:15pm.
