Comin’ Soon: New Concert Announcements

Although details are scarce at this time, there are a couple more new shows coming up for the Eighth Step at Proctors’ 45th anniversary season. Look for Martha Redbone on Saturday, March 23, as well as Peggy & Pete Seeger on Sunday, May 12.

In support of their new album, Bones, Young Guns will be bringing their arena-ready rock anthems to the Upstate Concert Hall in Clifton Park on Friday, December 7. Frank Palangi opens the show at 7:30pm. Tickets are slated to go on sale at 10am on Friday (November 23). The first 103 tix will be priced at $1.03; all tickets thereafter will be $10.

In January, omni-pop kingpins NRBQ return to town for their first area appearance since bassist-vocalist Casey McDonough took over for the departing Pete Donnelly back in September. The ever-madcap Terry Adams and his revamped crew land at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock at 8pm on Sunday, January 20. Tix are $20 in advance; $25 at the door.

NY Banjo Summit delivered a knock-out, sold-out show at The Egg in Albany earlier this month, but because of Hurricane Sandy, a handful of shows on the tour had to be postponed. Those shows have now been re-scheduled – the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia (January 16), the McCarter Theater Center in Princeton, NJ (January 19) and the Schimmel Center in NYC (January 20). And a new show has been added to the tour, as well – at the Calvin Theatre in Northampton at 8pm on Friday, January 18. The (slightly revised) line-up features banjo masters Béla Fleck, Tony Trischka, Bill Keith, Richie Stearns, Eric Weissberg and Noam Pikelny backed by a versatile, all-star band. Tickets for the Calvin Theatre concert go on sale on Friday (November 23), priced at $25, $35 & $45.

Club Helsinki in Hudson has added a batch of new shows to its upcoming concert calendar, including Matisyahu at 8pm on Monday, December 17 ($TBA); a New Year’s Eve throwdown with New Orleans high-energy trombonist Glen David Andrews at 9pm on Monday, December 31 ($TBA); the Big Takeover at 9pm on Saturday, January 5 ($12); the Billy Martin/Wil Blades Duo at 8pm on Wednesday, January 16 ($18); and a once-a-month spring residency of the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus Cabaret at 9pm on Saturday, February 23; Friday, March 22; and Saturday, April 27 ($TBA).

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: The Egg in Albany announced the addition of three new shows to its upcoming 2013 concert calendar, including Solas with the Duhks, Greg Brown and Josh Ritter & the Royal City Band.

New Orleans legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band parades into the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown for an evening of traditional jazz at 8pm on Friday, February 8. Tickets are $42; students $38. There will also be a special three-course dinner served prior to the show at 6pm in the Clark Café. Dinner is $27 per person.

Malcolm Getz has racked up plenty of acclaim for his work in films (“Sex and the City”), on television (“Caroline in the City,” HBO’s “Grey Gardens”) and on the Broadway stage (a Tony nominee for “Amour”). And as part of the Helsinki On Broadway cabaret series, he’ll be bringing his cabaret show to Club Helsinki in Hudson at 7pm on Sunday, December 16. Tickets are $20 & $35. Also on tap for Helsinki On Broadway – Tony Award-winning actress Linda Lavin at 7pm on Sunday, February 10 ($TBA).

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: The upcoming Spring 2013 season of performances at EMPAC at RPI in Troy have been announced, including a concert by avant-jazzers the Peter Evans Quintet. A couple of additional performances are still to-be-announced.

The annual holiday concert “Melodies of Christmas” at Proctors in Schenectady will once again feature the Empire State Orchestra & Youth Choral when it takes the stage for four performances on Thursday-Sunday, December 20-23. Joining in this year’s festivities will be special guests Big Medicine, Martha Gallagher, the Northeast Ballet and the Orlando School of Dance. Tickets are $25; limited $15 tickets on December 20 & 21.

Up-and-coming country musicians Jon Pardi and Frankie Ballard team up for the Tie One On tour, which is slated to make a stop at Vapor in the Saratoga Casino and Raceway in Saratoga Springs at 7:30pm on Thursday, December 6. Tickets are $10 in advance; $15 at the door. And while there’s been no official word yet from the venue, according to Keith Sweat’s website, the R&B veteran is scheduled to make a tourstop at Vapor on Thursday, April 25. Details TBA.

SOLD OUT: The Helsinki On Broadway cabaret concert by John Pizzarelli & Jessica Molaskey – slated for Club Helsinki in Hudson on Sunday, December 9 – is now officially sold out.

Red Square in Albany has a couple of primo new shows on tap, including keyboard wizard Marco Benevento and his band on Saturday, December 1, with Local 518 modern jazz-fusion power-groove trio the Way Down opening the show at 9pm ($14 in advance; $16 at the door). And in the wake of their show at Putnam Den in Saratoga Springs just last week, the Ryan Montbleau Band heads into Red Square for a pre-New Year’s Eve show at 9pm on Saturday, December 29. Tix are $15.

NYC singer-songwriter Patti Rothberg returns to the Local 518 for a show at Pauly’s Hotel in Albany on Friday, December 7. Erin Harkes opens the show at 9pm.
