6/7/13: Today’s Tips: Friday

MUSIC: Chris Stamey @ the Bearsville Theater, Woodstock. In support of his new album, Lovesick Blues, the alum of the dBs and the later incarnation of Big Star offers a special chamber-pop concert with his band featuring Jane Scarpantoni, Lydia Kavanagh and guests. Wygalator – featuring Janet Wygal and Tedd Prudhomme – opens the show. 9pm. $18.

FESTIVAL/MUSIC: Mountain Jam @ Hunter Mountain, Hunter. It’s Day Two with the Avett Brothers, Widespread Panic, David Wax Museum, Deer Tick, White Denim, Conspirator and more… Music officially kicks off at 12noon.

MUSIC: Lost Radio Rounders @ Bethlehem Public Library, Delmar. The vintage Americana duo of Tom Lindsay and Michael Eck perform “The Land of the Brave: Songs of Soldiers & Sailors.” 1pm. FREE.

ARTS WALK: First Friday @ various locations, Albany. Lots to see and do all around town, including “Color” at Lark Street BID, solo photography exhibit by Nippertown’s own man-about-town Timothy Reidy. And you can see more of Reidy’s work at Upstate Artists Guild’s “Don’t Fence Me In.” 5pm. FREE.

MUSIC: The Spamones @ Spring Street Gallery, Saratoga Springs. A one-night-only tribute to the Ramones, led by Dryer guitarist Bob Carlton. 10pm.

MUSIC: “Steppin’ Out With Ben Vereen” @ Skidmore College’s Zankel Music Center, Saratoga Springs. The Tony Award-winning actor, dancer and singer performs the music of Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra and the best of Broadway. In conjunction with Saratoga ArtsFest. 8pm. $60; $10 with ArtsPASS.

ART INSTALLATION: “Subliminal Transcriptions” @ the Arts Center of the Capital Region, Troy. Yael Erel’s immersive light installation with sound uses simple means – a light source and a reflector – to amplify minuscule conditions that are normally overlooked. 9am-7pm; artist talk at 1pm. Through Saturday.

THEATER: “Billy Elliot the Musical” @ Proctors, Schenectady. A joyous celebration of one boy’s journey to make his dreams come true as a dancer, trading in his boxing gloves for ballet shoes. With music by Elton John, the musical won 10 Tony Awards. 8pm. $20, $40, $45, $50, $55, $60, $65, $70 & $75. Through Sunday.

MUSIC: Julian Lynch @ BSP Lounge, Kingston. Lo-fi bedroom rocker Lynch brings his collaborative, co-headlining tour with the Luyas to Kingston. With Brown Bread & Von Holt. 9pm. $8.

MUSIC: Tequila Mockingbirds @ Skidmore College’s Tang Museum, Saratoga Springs. Pete Pashoukos and George Fletcher launch of the 2013 season of the Upbeat On the Roof concert series, and as you may have guessed, the concert takes place on the museum’s roof (or inside, if it’s raining). 7pm. FREE.

ARTS WALK: First Fridays Artswalk @ various locations, Pittsfield. 5-8pm. FREE.

MUSIC: The Erotics @ Putnam Den, Saratoga Springs. Mike Trash leads the sleaze-rockers into town, and the Spa City may never be the same. 9:30pm. $8.

FILM: “The Illusionist” @ the Saratoga Arts Center, Saratoga Springs. Written and directed by Neil Burger and based on a short story by Saratoga author Stephen Millhauser, the 2006 film offers a look at an enigmatic magician, starring Ed Norton, Jessica Biel and Paul Giamatti. 7pm. $8; $6 with ArtsPass.

MUSIC: Skip Parsons’ Riverboat Jazz Band @ the Fountain, Albany. Back for their regular monthly gig, playing New Orleans-style traditional jazz at one of Albany’s fave pizza joints. 10pm.

MUSIC: The Jody Shayne Trio @ Provence, Albany. 7pm.

PARTICIPATORY DANCE: Doc Scanlon’s Rhythm Boys @ Albany Elks Lodge, Albany. It’s the monthly First Friday Capital swing Dance, and Doc is joined by vocalist Colleen Pratt. 7:30pm free dance lesson; 8:30pm music. $15; $10 students, limited income & retirees.

GAME SHOW: The Price Is Right Live! @ the Palace Theatre, Albany. Come on down! Yes, it’s back once again – the live onstage version of the television game show. Personally, we’re holding out for “Password” to go on tour…

MUSIC: Albany Pro Musica @ Shaker Meeting House, Colonie. In addition to the full chorus selections, the singers will also break down into solos and small ensembles as they present an evening of cabaret-style night of show tunes, old standards and other popular songs. 7:30pm. $20 & $35.
