Beginning previews this week, Johnny Baseball is the fifth production of the Wiliamstown Theatre Festival (WTF) 2013 season and will be presented on the Nikos Stage from July 24 – August 3 (opening July 25). It is the second of three musicals this year. We were able to grab a few minutes with noted playwright Richard Dresser (Rounding Third) who wrote the book, and Obie award-winning actress De’Adre Aziza, who wowed audiences in Passing Strange and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.

In a new production directed by Gordon Greenberg (Working, Band Geeks!), Johnny Baseball is a quintessentially American musical that unearths the source of the Curse of the Red Sox and the secret to its triumphant end off Big Papi’s bat in 2004. First seen at the American Repertory Theatre in 2010, Johnny Baseball had mostly positive reviews, yet the playwright is in Williamstown where he continues to do rewrites.
