10/8/13: Today’s Tips: Tuesday
MUSIC: Brian Wilson and Jeff Beck @ the Palace Theatre, Albany. Legendary music icons, Grammy Award-winners and Rock & Roll Hall of Famers, Brian Wilson and Jeff Beck have teamed up for a historic rock tour that lands in town tonight. They’re each bringing their own bands (Wilson’s will also feature the Beach Boys’ Al Jardine and David Marks) and will play their own sets. And, yes, they’ll be playing together, too… 8pm. $45, $55, $75 & $115.
MUSIC: Christine Salem @ the Sanctuary for Independent Media, Troy. Hailing from La Réunion in the Indian Ocean, Salem sings maloya – the once-banned, African-influenced music of the Creole descendants of slaves who worked the island’s sugar plantations. These are dangerous tunes that rouse the spirits and challenge the authorities, which means that her shows are as controversial as they are spellbinding. 7pm. $10. MUSIC: Lee Ranaldo & the Dust @ Club Helsinki, Hudson. Today marks the release of Last Night on Earth, the band’s debut album, and tonight the band – which features former Sonic Youth members Lee Renaldo (guitar) and Steve Shelley (drums) – will celebrate with a CD release party in Hudson. 8pm. $20.
READING: T.C. Boyle @ UAlbany Performing Arts Center’s Recital Hall, Albany. The New York Times has celled him “one of the most inventive and verbally exuberant writers of his generation.” He’s the author of nine short story collections and 14 novels, including “San Miguel” (2012), “Drop City” (2003), “The Road to Wellville” (1993) and “World’s End” (1987). 8pm. FREE. Also a free seminar at 4:15pm at UAlbany Science Library’s Standish Room.
MUSIC: Handler & Levesque @ Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, Troy. The kick-off Music@Noon show features the husband-and-wife guitar and mandolin duo of Judy Handler and Mark Levesque blending Brazilian, Latin American, swing, gypsy, classical and folk music influences to create their sophisticated and expressive arrangements. 12noon.
