Jacob’s Pillow Offers Shen Wei Dance Arts in an Unusual “Rite of Spring” This Fall at Mass MoCA [Berkshire on Stage]

by Larry Murray

Hot news for dance lovers – Jacob’s Pillow will be co-presenting Shen Wei Dance Arts with MASS MoCA on October 26 and 27 at MASS MoCA’s Hunter Center for the Performing Arts. The company will perform Rite of Spring (2003) – in honor of its 100th year – and the riveting dance Collective Measures (2013). The performance coincides with the final weekend to see the Xu Bing: Phoenix exhibit.

As you can see in the video embedded above, Shen Wei’s company conflates the visual and movement arts with an Asian tinged Stravinsky score that has been re-orchestrated for even more contemporary instruments. Visually stunning and viscerally gratifying Shen Wei Dance Arts is a truly distinct and innovative company that synthesizes Eastern and Western aesthetics to craft images of singular beauty and transcendence. The company was founded in 2001 by Shen Wei, an internationally celebrated and renowned choreographer. Wei, is a recipient of the MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship. He was featured as the lead choreographer for the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics. Wei’s choreography reflects a multicultural exchange of ideas, incorporating influences of Chinese traditional culture, American modernism, European surrealism, and elements of ancient drama. In short, a perfect fit for both Jacob’s Pillow and Mass MoCA.
