Comin’ Soon: New Concert Announcements

Back in September he turned in a fine set at The Egg in Albany opening for his dad, the great Richard Thompson. And at 9pm on Friday, December 20 Teddy Thompson will have a headlining night of his own at Club Helsinki in Hudson. Tickets are $25 in advance; $30 at the door. And that’s not all… Also newly announced for Club Helsinki are bluesman Taj Mahal at 8pm on Thursday, February 20 ($TBA); the Punch Brothers’ banjo master Noam Pikelny & Friends at 8pm on Sunday, February 23 ($TBA); and the North Mississippi Allstars at 8pm on Sunday, March 2 ($TBA).

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: The first concert announcement for the Saratoga Performing Arts Center’s 2014 summer season? That would be the classic rock sound of San Francisco triple bill – Journey, the Steve Miller Band and the mighty Tower of Power.

Rapper Chris Webby is slated for a return to the Upstate Concert Hall in Clifton Park on Saturday, December 14. The evening kicks off at 8pm with performances by AMJ, Dutch Mxster and Third Eye Visions. Tickets are on sale now for $18 in advance; $20 at the door. Other new shows just added to the UCH schedule include girl group Fifth Harmony with Local 518 tween popster Talia Denis at 7pm on Monday, March 3 ($20 in advance; $22 at the door; on sale at 10am on Saturday); and Bring Me the Horizon with Of Mice and Men at 7pm on Tuesday, March 4 ($22 in advance; $24 at the door; on sale at 10am on Friday).

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: The Experience Hendrix tribute tour is returning to the Palace Theatre in Albany with an all-star line-up of musicians including Bootsy Collins, Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang, Ernie Isley, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Dweezil Zappa, Eric Gales, Doyle Bramhall II, Eric Johnson, Mato Nanji, Ana Popovic, Billy Cox and Chris Layton.

The Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock will host the CD release party for Elizabeth Mitchell’s new album, The Sounding Joy: Christmas Songs in and out of the Ruth Crawford Seeger Songbook at 8pm on Friday, December 20. Among Mitchell’s many friends joining her on stage will be Natalie Merchant, John Medeski, Happy Traum, Gail Ann Dorsey, Amy Helm, Byron Isaacs, Daniel & Storey Littleton, Mike & Ruthy, Simi Stone, Jay Ungar & Molly Mason, Marco Benevento and more. Tickets are $25 & $40.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Proctors in Schenectady announced a big batch of new concerts for 2014, including the Pat Metheny Unity Group, Kristin Chenoweth, the Ed Palermo Big Band, Line of Swords, Persiflage, Lincoln Mayorga & Sheri Bauer-Mayorga and more…

UPDATE: Ticket prices have been announced for Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds’ New Year’s Eve Tuesday, December 31) show at Club Helsinki in Hudson – $35 in advance; $40 at the door.

The utterly unique That 1 Guy is returning to Red Square in Albany at 8pm on Sunday, March 2. Tickets are $12 in advance; $15 at the door.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: The Charlie Daniels Band, Bret Michaels and the Marshall Tucker Band will be teaming up for a bash at Albany’s Times Union Center to raise funds for housing for homeless veterans. Tickets go on sale at 10am on Saturday (November 23).

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Singer-songwriter Holly Williams – granddaughter of Hank Williams, the daughter of Hank Williams, Jr. and half-sister of Hank III – was slated to make her Nippertown debut at Club Helsinki in Hudson on Friday (November 22), but the concert has been cancelled.

They were the break-out act of this summer’s Solid Sound festival… Keyboardist-vocalists Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig lead their oh-so-snappy alt-pop band Lucius into Pearl Street in Northampton on Tuesday, December 3. Opening the show at 7pm will be Kingsley Flood and the Suitcase Junket. Tickets are $12 in advance; $14 at the door.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: The Egg announced that Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Dave Mason and his band will be bringing his multimedia “Traffic Jam” concert to town.
