4/2/14: Today’s Tips: Wednesday

MUSIC: The Carolina Chocolate Drops @ The Egg’s Swyer Theatre, Albany. With the departure of Dom Flemons, there’s been a major personnel shift since the CCD last played Nippertown, but fiddler-banjoist-vocalist Rhiannon Giddens is still at the helm, joined by Hubby Jenkins (guitar, mandolin, vocals) and newcomers cellist Malcolm Parson and multi-instrumentalist Rowan Corbett for a night of American string band music, blues and ballads. The Birds of Chicago will open the concert. 7:30pm. $34.50

MUSIC: Sam Baker @ the Iron Horse Music Hall, Northampton. The Austin-based singer-songwriter is simply a master. His album, Say Grace, was one of the best of 2013. With Carrie Elkin. 7pm. $18.

COMEDY: Jim Belushi & the Chicago Board of Comedy @ Proctors, Schenectady. Belushi leads the improv sketch troupe through a daring night of onstage hijinks. Who knows, maybe your suggestion will prompt the best sketch of the night… 8pm. $20-$50.

FILMS/FUNDRAISER: Youth FX Film Screening @ Spectrum 8 Theatres, Albany. The Grand Street Community Arts’ teen filmmaking program premiers their 2013 short films – world premieres and several encores of award-winning short documentary and narrative films created by teens from the city of Albany. Followed by Q&A with the filmmakers. 6:30pm. $10; $5 students.

THEATER: “Gypsy: A Musical Fable” @ Capital Repertory Theatre, Albany.”Everything’s Coming Up Roses…” Maggie Mancinelli-Cahill directs the classic musical based on the memoirs of famed stripper Gypsy Rose Lee, featuring a cast of 23 from Broadway star Mary Callanan to local TV personality Benita Zahn. 7:30pm. $20-$65. FILM: “Being Ginger” @ the Arts Center of the Capital Region, Troy. The League of Extraordinary Red Heads hosts filmmaker Scott Harris and his documentary about life as a red head looking for love. Followed by Q&A. 6:20pm. $10.
