Comin’ Soon: New Concert Announcements

Club Helsinki has beefed up its summer concert calendar with upcoming shows by a pair of iconic blues-roots guitarists. Taj Mahal is slated to return to the Hudson nightspot at 8pm on Wednesday, August 20. Tickets are $75 & $85. Meanwhile, founding member of Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, as well as a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Jorma Kaukonen steps into the Helsinki spotlight at 9pm on Saturday, August 30. Tickets are $35 & $45. Also new on Helsinki’s ever-expanding calendar is the great bluegrass combo, the Del McCoury Band, at 8pm on Thursday, August 28. Tickets are $35 & $55. And just to show the huge range of music that Helsinki books… Andrea McArdle – who played the title role in “Annie” on Broadway in 1977 – steps into the spotlight at 7pm on Sunday, October 12. Tickets are $50.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: The Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs finally added some hip-hop flavor to its 2014 concert season with the announcement that Drake and Lil Wayne are headed to SPAC on a double-bill. Tickets go on sale on Friday (June 20).
The duo of Nick Cearley and Lauren Molina are better known as the Skivvies, and for good reason. They’re not only indie popsters; they’re also undie-popsters. And their show – part music, part comedy, part burlesque – is headed into the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Williamstown for a two-night stand at 7:30pm on Sunday & Monday, July 27 & 28. Tickets are $40, $60 & $80.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: The great jazz fusion drummer Billy Cobham leads his band into The Egg in Albany to celebrate the 40th anniversary of his landmark solo album debut, Spectrum. Tickets go on sale on Friday (June 20).
Howe Glassman had been trying to bring veteran indie rocker Chuck Cleaver to town for 15 years. Cleaver’s band Wussy finally made it to Nippertown back in March, and apparently the Low Beat charmed ’em plenty ’cause they’re coming back for a return engagement on Thursday, July 24 with Bloodshot Bill opening at 8pm. Advance tickets are on sale now for $10. Oh, and by the way, that Blotto reunion show that was scheduled for last month and then cancelled due to F. Lee Harvey Blotto’s torn rotator cuff injury? Well, the Blotto show has been re-scheduled for Thursday, August 21. Additional details TBA.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: A collaborative evening of great acoustic music is coming to The Egg in Albany when the Milk Carton Kids & Sarah Jarosz join forces together around a single microphone.
The same live Milk Carton Kids/Sarah Jarosz concert mash-up will also be making a tour stop at the Calvin Theatre in Northampton at 8pm on Sunday, October 19. Tickets are $25 & $35 and will go on sale on Friday (June 20). Also on sale Friday for the Calvin is Mary Chapin Carpenter with Tift Merritt at 8pm on Friday, October 24. Tix are $28.50, $38.50 & $48.50.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Stand-up comic Kathleen Madigan offers comic relief at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall this fall. Tickets go on sale on Monday (June 23).
The four-time Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalist Diane Reeves is headed into the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington at 7pm on Sunday, October 19. She’ll be joined by Gerald Clayton, Romero Lubambo, James Genus and Terreon Gully. Tickets go on sale to the general public at 12noon on Saturday (June 21), priced at $32, $52 & $82.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Radio station 99.5 The River’s “Fall Night In” takes over the Palace Theatre in Albany on Tuesday, September 9. The concert features headliners the Fray, as well as red hot pop duo A Great Big World and Andy Grammer. Tickets go on sale to the general public at 10am on Friday (June 20).
In addition to the previously announced headliners – including Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, Railroad Earth, Carolina Chocolate Drops and lots more – a batch of new bands have been added to the line-up for FreshGrass at MASS MoCA in North Adams. Hurray for the Riff Raff, Haas Kowert Tice, the Deedle Deedle Dees, the Novel Ideas, Salvation Alley String Band, Ramblin Jug Stompers and the Flying Garbanzos are now also slated to perform at the September 19-21 bluegrass and roots festival.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Veteran easy-listening folk-rockers America will ride into The Egg on “A Horse With No Name” for a nostalgic, harmony-laden concert in Albany. Tickets go on sale on Friday (June 20).

Pete Donnelly (of the Figgs and ex-NRBQ) is headed back to the Spring Street Gallery in Saratoga Springs for a homecoming concert on Friday, August 22. Brett Newski opens the show.
