LIVE: Dana & Susan Robinson @ the Tang Museum, 8/1/14

Review and photographs by Andrzej Pilarczyk

This Vermont-based couple was fun, funny and intimate, performing in front of a full-house gathered outdoors on the roof – no joke – of Skidmore College’s Tang Museum in Saratoga Springs for the latest concert in the 14th annual UpBeat On the Roof Summer Series.

Dana & Susan Robinson played some old-time mountain music, but focused primarily on their harmony-laden original songs based on events from their daily lives, their road travels or even inspired by watching the Discovery Channel in various hotel rooms from here to Ireland. One of the highlights of their stellar performance was “Farmer’s Market” (from their latest album, American Hornpipe) in which they survey the market’s offerings alphabetically.

Between songs, Dana’s kept things moving along with his witty banter as he switched between his guitar, banjo or fiddle. Susan played guitar and served as a perfect foil vocally.

Though Dana & Susan Robinson may be playing small venues for now, they are seasoned veterans of the road and are destined for greater things in the future. If you were among the several hundred people to enjoy their easy-on-the-ears roof-top performance for free, rest assured the next time they’re out-and-about in the region, you might have to pay to hear this splendid duo. And they’ll be worth it…

The UpBeat On the Roof concert series continues at Skidmore College’s Tang Museum at 7pm on Friday (August 8) with a free performance by soulful singer-songwriter Jocelyn Arndt. GO HERE for more info and a complete schedule of concerts…
