Real Good for FREE: Albany’s September in the City Art Fair

The September in the City Art Fair series returns to Tricentennial Park in downtown Albany on Wednesdays in September from 11:30am-2pm. A free weekly lunchtime showcase for local art, music and culture, the fairs feature exhibits and artwork available for purchase from regional mixed media artists and crafters. And each week a different Local 518 musical guest will provide a live soundtrack for the fair.

Applications for September in the City artists and crafters are still being accepted. You can download an application or call 518.434.5416 for more information.

Here’s the schedule of live music for the September in the City Art Fair series:

STEVE CANDLEN
September 3
Steve Candlen’s songs are guided by his soulful singing and the kind of solid rhythm guitar you’d expect from a man who spent most of his musical career playing drums in bands, including Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals. Perhaps the only Local 518 musician to have the distinction of being voted Best Male Vocalist in Metroland one year and Best Drummer the next, these days the multi-talented Candlen performs solo on his funky old archtop guitar. The Times Union’s David Malachowski called his latest album, Red, a “compelling, inventive record that will surprise many, and satisfy more.”

THE BONDVILLE BOYS
September 10
An original, eclectic roots and bluegrass band from Vermont, the Bondville Boys are known for their sweet harmonies, excellent musicianship, great energy and eclectic setlists that touch on everything from Flatt & Scruggs to Blondie. Since 1990, the Bondville Boys have brought their hard-edged bluegrass to appreciative audiences throughout the Northeast, sharing the stage with roots music legends like Del McCoury, the Nashville Bluegrass Band, Buddy Cage and the Gibson Brothers.

HOLLY & EVAN
September 17
Holly & Evan are the blues. Both from long, rich musical backgrounds, Holly Taormina and Evan Conway have updated the tradition of the barrelhouse with their unique style. Together, they showcase a wide range of original and cover material, in the styles of blues, jazz, and soul. The originals, which are often featured on local radio, are catchy, full of personality, and can appeal to audiences everywhere.

ALEX SMITH
September 24
Alex Smith grew up in Long Lake, in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains. His music is informed heavily by the community and legendary folk music of the Adirondacks, steeped in tradition by always looking ahead to the future. Smith began touring while in college at St. Lawrence University, and there released his first two albums, Sawdust, and Live with Dylan Rice. Now, five years later, he tours and records extensively both solo and with his band the Mountain Sound, and signed in 2012 with Wepecket Island Records for his third album, Hamilton County.
