THEATER: “The Secret Garden” @ Capital Repertory Theatre, Albany. It’s opening night! Frances Hodgson Burnett’s beloved book comes to life in the Tony Award-winning musical about an orphan girl who transforms a dead and wasted garden into a paradise where hearts can grow and miracles can happen. READING: Celebration of the Poetry of James Laughlin @ UAlbany Science Library’s Standish Room, Albany. The New York State Writers Institute celebrates the life and poetry of the founder of New Directions press and revolutionary publisher who brought to the attention of the American public the work of such writers as Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams, Jorge Luis Borges, Herman Hesse, William Saroyan, Delmore Schwartz, Dylan Thomas, Thomas Merton, John Hawkes, Denise Levertov, James Agee, Bertolt Brecht, Celine, Cocteau, Karl Shapiro, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Vladimir Nabokov, and the single biggest-selling author published by the press – the playwright Tennessee Williams. Guests include biographer Ian S. MacNiven (author of “Literchoor Is My Beat: A Life of James Laughlin”) and Peter Glassgold (editor of “The Collected Poems of James Laughlin”). 4pm. FREE.
