2/17/15: Today’s Top Tips: Tuesday (Mardi Gras)

MUSIC: Michael Torsone’s Dixieland Quintet @ the Falcon, Marlboro. It’s Mardi Gras time! Hammond B3 organist Michael Torsone leads his band through a celebration of the music of New Orleans. Let the good times roll! 7pm. Donations encouraged.

THEATER/MAGIC: “The Illusionists: Witness the Impossible” @ Proctors, Schenectady. It’s opening night! This mind-blowing showcase features the jaw-dropping talents of seven incredible illusionists – Yu Ho-Jin, Dan Sperry, Jeff Hobson, Andrew Basso, Kevin James, Aaron Crow and Adam Trent. Expect an evening of hilarious magic tricks, death-defying stunts and acts of breathtaking wonder. 7:30pm. $20-$85. Through Sunday.

MUSIC: Matt Edwards @ Cafe Nola, Schenectady. The piano man from Buck2Fifty pounds the ivories, digging into the songbags of Professor Longhair, Fats Domino, Dr. John and other Crescent City keyboard greats. 12noon-4pm.

MUSIC: Mardi Gras Bacchanal @ Club Helsinki Ballroom, Hudson. A menu of classic NOLA cocktails and special Mardi Gras small plates will be available. Accompanied by an evening of Big Easy piano music from Tony Kieraldo. 7pm. $7.

MUSIC: Velocity Horns @ St. Paul’s Church, Troy. The progressive brass quartet’s program is titled “Our Favorite Things,” featuring works by Bizet, Holst, Debussy and Saint-Saens. 12noon. FREE.

ARTIST TALK/FILM: Distracted Wreading (From Structural Film to Digital Poetics) @ Union College’s Karp Hall, Schenectady. The multimedia event explores the linguistic turn art has taken since the 1960s when language became a primary material for artists in the art world. Tony Coates, artist and Professor of Modern Culture & Media at Brown University, will present and discuss his video work. With word films by Peggy Ahwesh, D.A. Pennebaker, Hollis Frampton, Mona Hatoum, Tan Lin, Paul Sharits, Michael Snow and Brian Kim Stefans. 6pm. FREE.

READING/PERFORMANCE: Nitty Gritty Poetry Slam @ the Low Beat, Albany. Hosted by Thom Francis. 7pm sign-up; 7:30pm open mic; 8pm slam. $5; $3 students.
