The 37th Annual Photography Regional @ Opalka Gallery, Albany. Since 1979, the annual Photo Regional has served to highlight both emerging and established artists within a 150 mile radius of Albany. Uncanny Valley @ Independent Art Projects, North Adams. Shona Macdonald’s current work records and documents her experiences of living in the area, of experiencing the uncanny and of observing and recording small, intimate places we encounter on daily commutes. Muses and Family @ Lapham Gallery, Glens Falls. Tom O’Brien and Janet Tsakis exhibit painted, drawn and sculpted portraits that aspire to capture the essence of those closest to them: family members, friends and muses. The World As We See It, As We Know It @ Clement Art Gallery, Troy. Mixed media paintings by Sara Pruiksma and pastel paintings by Marlene Wiedenbaum. Opening reception: Friday, February 27, 6-9pm. (Through March 25)

The Artist Revealed: Artist Portraits and Self-Portraits @ Arkell Museum, Canajoharie. This exhibition brings together fifty works in a variety of media that examine self-portraits and portraits of other artists. Included in the show are works by Milton Avery, Chuck Close, Leonard Baskin, Edward Steichen, Norman Rockwell and Anders Zorn. Sitters include James McNeill Whistler, Thomas Eakins, Charlie Chaplin, C.S. Lewis and Pablo Casals. Also on display is From House Pets to Endangered Species, an exhibition of prints and drawings by Beth Van Hoesen. Opens Sunday, March 1. (Through June 14)

Machine Age Modernism @ The Clark, Williamstown. An exhibition of prints that capture the tumultuous aesthetic and political climate of the years before, during, and after World Wars I and II in Britain, a period today known as the Machine Age. Opens Saturday, February 28. (Through May 17)

Queen of Serpents @ McDaris Fine Art, Hudson. Works by Lithuanian-born, regionally-based fashion designer Vilma Mare, who examines contemporary culture through the lens of her Baltic heritage. The exhibition will be comprised of artisanal clothing styles including coats, skirts and other vestments as well as five large sartorial tapestries based on characters from a mythical story and nine large original flags depicting a traditional celebration. Heritage Homecoming: Heifer Project International in Poland @ Galerie Giroux at Griffin, Great Barrington. Photojournalist Erik Hoffner will display a collection of photographs that document heritage breeds of livestock that US-based Heifer Project International saved from extinction and the lives of small-scale farmers to which the animals gave new strength and hope. Action/Reaction @ GCCA Catskill Gallery, Catskill. A solo show by Anne Christman, whose layered paintings are reminiscent of geological surfaces – burnished geodes, fool’s gold or flecks of mica in granite – and appear to transform like quicksilver as the viewer moves through the curated space. Extreme Surfaces @ GCCA Catskill Gallery, Catskill. Works by regional artists with national and international acclaim featuring John Lees, Portia Munson, Linda B Horn, Lorrie Fredette, Kate Hamilton and Paula De Luccia as well as others. (Through February 28)

Ten Spot Art Show @ Lichtenstein Center for the Arts, Pittsfield. An annual invitational show that features contemporary artists in the Berkshires and surrounding area, each of whom will have a work featured on a billboard placed somewhere in Berkshire County, bringing the gallery out to the streets. The 2015 Ten Spot Artists are: Judy Bates, Marge Bride, Debbie Carter, Frank Jackson, Tatiana Klacsmann, Eli Merritt, Melanie Mowinski, Karin Stack, Rebecca Weinman and Bill Wright. Bacchantes and Bivalves @ John Davis Gallery, Hudson. Two bodies of work by Thomas Micchelli: Bacchantes, an ongoing series of paintings and drawings, and Bivalves, a set of two-part drawings. (Through March 1)

Undercover: Revealing Design in Quilts, Coverlets and Bed Hangings @ Albany Institute of History & Art, Albany. An exhibition investigating the designs and patterns that decorate American bed covers of the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. More than 30 bed covers and complementary objects such as illustrated books, paintings, ceramics and botanical specimens reveal a variety of design sources used by American women and men to decorate their beds. (Through March 8)

Palpably Synthetic: 3D Prints, Printing and Animation @ Union College Wikoff Student Gallery, Schenectady. An exhibition of student works created with 3D modeling technology featuring Frank Chiarulli, John Famulare, Kristofer Hammer, Melissa Harvey, John Hatheway, Mark Hilbert, Sheila Kang, Joshua Loew, Sarka Sochorova and Michael Vallejo. Textual @ Mandeville Gallery, Schnenectady. An exhibition of contemporary works that employ letters and words within the visual art context to convey satirical humor, voice political opinion, question linguistic meaning and examine communication. The Stone Palette: Lithographs in 19th-Century France @ The Hyde Collection, Glens Falls. Thirty-one prints from The Hyde’s Tobin Sparling Family Collection explore lithography as a creative medium in 19th-century France. (Through March 15)

Along His Own Lines: A Retrospective of New York Realist Eugene Speicher @ New York State Museum. An exhibition of 39 paintings and 35 drawings and works on paper by the noted American realist and founding member of the Woodstock Artists Colony. (Through March 22)

Dual Nature: Ends With Beginnings @ Saratoga Arts Center, Saratoga Springs. Works by Gabe Brown and Andrea Hersh, two artists who seek a better understanding of the correlation between nature and humanity. Through the exploration of various media and observation, they strive to speak to the similarities and differences between society and the world we inhabit. (Through March 28)

XL: Large-Scale Paintings from the Permanent Collection @ The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, Poughkeepsie. An exhibition of larger-than-life canvases that invite an extraordinary visual experience in which the viewer is immersed in the field of painting, including work by Kevin Appel, Roger Brown, Nancy Graves, Joyce Kozloff, Alfred Leslie, Agnes Martin, Joan Mitchell and Jules Olitski. Matter of Form @ The Laffer Gallery, Schuylerville. Works by Timothy Kadish, David Miller and Gary Zack, three artists who embrace form as a way to unite the visible elements in their works, such as color, light, line, shape and dimension. (Through March 29)

Caprices: The Sculptures of Bruno Pasquier-Desvignes, Curated by R.O. Blechman @ Hudson Opera House, Hudson. On view will be a selection of Bruno Pasquier-Desvignes’ sculptures made from recycled and found materials including wooden wine crates, cardboard boxes, wire hangers, plastic bottles and bicycle wheels. Eclipse @ MASS MoCA, North Adams. An installation that combines video, sound, and text to create an immersive and contemplative exhibition that examines species extinction through the passenger pigeon, whose once-massive population disappeared 100 years ago. (Through March 31)

Soviet Form, Jewish Context @ The Yiddish Book Center, Amherst. Paintings by Soviet Jewish painter Felix Lembersky. (Through March 31)

The Ties That Bind: Artists and Archives @ The University Art Museum, Albany. Working in a wide variety of media, seven artists use the archive in its myriad forms to explore our collective histories and shared humanity: Anna Craycroft, Aurélien Froment, Elise McMahon, Michael Oatman, Kateřina Šedá, Shane Aslan Selzer and Bryan Zanisnik. Meleko Mokgosi @ The School, Kinderhook. Large-scale works by Meleko Mokgosi that examine notions of national identity and post-colonial aesthetics using Botswana, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe as case studies. Fathi Hassan: Migration of Signs @ Williams College Museum of Art, Williamstown. Fathi Hassan transforms Arabic script into illegible text to illustrate the uncertainty embedded in the experience of migration and displacement. His most recent works explore the idea of Nubia, Egypt and the Middle East as mythical and nostalgic space. They serve as allegories of the diasporic condition, spiritual journeys and key reform movements like the Arab Spring. (Through April 26)

Realms of Earth and Sky: Indian Painting from the Fifteenth to the Nineteenth Century @ The Tang Teaching Museum, Saratoga Springs. Exploring important cultural narratives that remain central to living belief systems on the Indian subcontinent, this exhibition includes 43 historic South Asian paintings spanning the fifteenth to nineteenth centuries, from the opulence of the Mughal court to stories of gods in human form, from battle scenes to intimate depictions of courtly love. A series of free events includes acclaimed artists, art-making, dance, music and tours. (Through May 17)

Frank Lloyd Wright: Early Work @ Williams College Museum of Art, Williamstown. One of the most prodigious architects of the 20th century, Frank Lloyd Wright published his early works in a luxurious portfolio of 100 plates in Berlin in 1910. In conjunction with Professor Eugene J. Johnson’s seminar Wright Writing, twenty-six of these plates of Wright’s architectural designs come to WCMA from Chapin Library. (Through May 24)

Second Look: Oil Paintings by Lisa David @ Mabee Farm Historic Site, Rotterdam Junction. Inspired by what others neglect to see, Lisa David captures the essence of a moment by focusing on subtle differences in light. (Through May 31)

Lee Boronson: Plastic Fantastic @ MASS MoCA, North Adams. Lee Boroson’s large-scale installations, using inflatables, fabric and glass, create a phenomenological and immersive audience experience based on the elemental forces in nature: air, fog, smoke, fire and the cosmos.

Three Centuries of American Art @ Williams College Museum of Art, Williamstown. Familiar favorites along with artwork new to WCMA’s collection provide a panoply of American creativity. Edward Hopper’s Morning in a City, back on view after its international tour, joins a colorful geometric gouache painting by Stuart Davis. Portrait paintings by John Smibert and Thomas Eakins coalesce with sculpture, decorative arts, and beloved works by Maurice Prendergast. Curator tour: Tuesday, February 24, 12noon. (Through October 4)
