Landscape: Up Close and Far Away @ The Chatham Bookstore, Chatham. Works by Judith Vargas Warren in mixed media, watercolors, pastels and collage. (Through August 28)

Human Essence @ Albany Center Gallery, Albany. Works by three photographers, who each start with a conventional photograph: Michael P. Farrell then places two images together to create new meaning out of the familiar, and challenges the viewer to reconsider the conventional; Stephen Honicki is a visual storyteller who combines text with images to allow viewers to find their own interpretation of his dramatic interplays; and Brian Williams explores the overlooked details of the human body, fragmenting form and complementing skin tones with colored fabrics. Kenichi Hoshine @ R Wells Gallery, Hudson. Working in layers of graphite, charcoal, paint, wax, and tea, Kenichi Hoshine creates glimpses of fragmented figures in varying levels of focus. The resulting effect appears as partially concealed faces, hands, and other fractioned sections of the body, seemingly emerge from beyond—or withdraw into—a fog-like atmosphere. (Through August 29)

Reimagined! An International Show of Comic and Cartoon Art @ Lichtenstein Center for the Arts, Pittsfield. A show featuring both local and international artists exhibiting re-imagining superheroes in new and creative ways. (Through August 29)

The Unruly Jewels of Linda Kaye-Moses @ Lauren Clark Fine Art, Great Barrington. The unruly jewels in this exhibition include jewels plus enclosures or ‘nesting cases’, a form that Linda Kaye-Moses has been exploring for several decades. Although she is primarily a jewel maker, these pieces allow Kaye-Moses to create jewels that concern themselves not simply with function, but also with the implicit/explicit narrative capacity of adornment and enclosure as sculptural form. Mine. Yours. Ours. @ Center for Photography at Woodstock, Woodstock. While referencing Woody Guthrie’s iconic folk song This Land is Your Land in the title, five artists expand upon romantic themes often associated with landscape painting and photography and directly raise the question of photography’s ability to document a place and add to its collective history. Artists in the show are William Lamson, Melanie Schiff, Barry Stone, Richard T. Walker and Letha Wilson. (Through September 7)

Liz Deschenes: Gallery 4.1.1 @ MASS MoCA, North Adams. Liz Deschenes takes the medium of photography itself and its conditions as the subject of her work. Described as “self-reflexive” or “concrete photography,” Deschenes’ practice makes visible the materials, properties, and chemical processes of photography rather than represent the external world.

The Making of the Hudson River School @ Albany Institute of History and Art. The Albany Institute of History and Art unveils its first online exhibition, which answers the frequently asked question, “What is the Hudson River School?”

Artists’ Choice: An Expanded Field of Photography @ MASS MoCA, North Adams. In conjunction with a solo exhibition of work specifically made for MASS MoCA, Liz Deschenes has curated a group exhibition featuring six artists whose work expands the field of photography: Dana Hoey, Miranda Lichtenstein, Craig Kalpakjian, Josh Tonsfeldt, Sara VanDerBeek and Randy West. Several of the featured artists make work that is considered photographic but is camera-less, while, for others, photography has laid the groundwork for the moving image or functions as a jumping-off point for sculptural investigations.

Boston Sculptors Gallery @ Chesterwood, Stockbridge. Homer’s America: Selections from the Permanent Collection @ The Hyde Collection, Glens Falls. Winslow Homer is considered one of the most accomplished and prolific illustrators of the nineteenth century. This exhibition features a selection of two dozen works from the Museum’s permanent collection, mostly engravings, as well as watercolors, one oil painting, and a rare etching. Also on display: The Late Drawings of Andy Warhol: 1973-1987 will feature 50 drawings, some of which are on view to the public for the very first time. (Through September 16)

RE-FORM-ED @ Lapham Gallery, Glens Falls. Works by Adam Daily, Sassoon Kosian and Carol Radsprecher that evaluate and define different shapes and forms using both traditional art techniques and technology. (Through September 18)

El Anatsui: Five Decades @ The School, Kinderhook. The School celebrates its first year anniversary with a solo exhibition of works by El Anatsui spanning fifty years of his career, from compositions in painting, wood, and clay to the magnificent metal works for which he is renowned. (Through September 26)

Vincent Van Gogh and Nature @ The Clark, Williamstown. In Arles and Saint-Rémy, Vincent Van Gogh painted elemental landscapes in snow, wind, rain and sunshine, while making incisive images of insects, leaves and rocks that reflect his knowledge of illustrated natural history publications. This will be the first exhibition to explore this subject in depth, with some forty oil paintings and ten drawings that survey the artist’s developing relationship with his natural surroundings. Whistler’s Mother: Grey, Black, and White @ The Clark, Williamstown. An exhibition celebrating the iconic American painting as well as 25 additional works by James McNeill Whistler. (Through September 27)

Things of This World Keeping Their Difficult Balance @ Sienna Patti Contemporaryi, Lenox. A solo exhibition of work by Bettina Speckner, whose jewelry creations based on tintypes examine the balance between the subjective and the objective, harnessing the inherent “historical” quality of found photographs to elicit a new experience of time. Three Centuries of American Art @ Williams College Museum of Art, Williamstown. Familiar favorites along with artwork new to WCMA’s collection provide a panoply of American creativity. Edward Hopper’s Morning in a City, back on view after its international tour, joins a colorful geometric gouache painting by Stuart Davis. Ghetto Garniture: Wu Tang Worcester @ Ferrin Contemporary, North Adams. Roberto Lugo’s ceramic works explore eclecticism and culture by juxtaposing street graffiti, European decorative patterning and rich symbolism drawn from his Puerto Rican heritage. (Through October 12)

Dismantling The House @ The Tang Teaching Museum, Saratoga Springs. A selection of work by female artists who adopt unconventional approaches to medium, genre and other art historical categories to destabilize traditional notions of painting, craft and pop culture. (Through October 18)

Seeing Double: The Anaglyphs of Eric Egas @ Albany Institute of History and Art, Albany. Evoking imaginary worlds between dream and memory, these three-dimensional stereoscopic images trick the eye into seeing depth with the aid of 3D glasses. (Through October 25)

Modern Wings & Shaker Roots @ Hancock Shaker Village, Pittsfield. Contemporary artists Jon Brooks, Fritz Horstman, Christina LaSala and Dennis Maher explore the Shaker aesthetic in this exhibition of large-scale sculpture installed across the museum campus. (Through November 1)

Profound and Poignant @ Dyson Gallery, Schenectady. An exhibit that examines the lives of Union alumni and others from the College who were key witnesses and makers of history in the Civil War era, including two secretaries of state, military leaders, Medal of Honor recipients and the man who failed to prevent Lincoln’s assassination. (Through December 31)

Clifford Ross: Landscape Seen & Imagined @ MASS MoCA, North Adams. This major mid-career survey documents Clifford Ross’s longstanding project to reconcile realism and abstraction. The exhibition takes place throughout two buildings, six galleries and an exterior performing arts courtyard and includes a 24’ high x 114’ long photograph on raw wood that spans the length of MASS MoCA’s tallest gallery and an immersive installation of animated video on twelve separate 24’ high screens. A second phase of the exhibition, launching June 26, features an immersive outdoor video installation and an augmented reality experience accessible through the viewer’s smartphone.

Walter Launt Palmer: Painting the Moment @ Albany Institute of History and Art, Albany. Artist Walter Launt Palmer (1854–1932), the son of Albany sculptor Erastus Dow Palmer, has enjoyed a revival of interest in the art world over the last several years. The Albany Institute holds one of the largest public collections of his work, including oil and watercolor paintings, pastels, and drawings, as well as letters and photographs. This exhibition presents for the first time in more than a decade the broad range of Palmer’s work, offering a visual overview of his life, travels, and artistic interests. (Through August 16)

Glazed and Diffused @ Ferrin Contemporary, North Adams. This survey exhibition focuses on a select group of international artists chosen for their use of fired clay and glaze pigment to convey abstract content. Opener 29: Arturo Herrera — Day Before @ The Tang Teaching Museum, Saratoga Springs. 100 new paintings from Arturo Herrera for which he selected small books from flea markets and then manipulated and altered these found objects. By drawing lines, patterns, or his signature cartoon images across the covers and sealing the book shut, the artist transforms the books into objects infused with new meaning. (Through August 23)

Homer’s America: Selections from the Permanent Collection @ The Hyde Collection, Glens Falls. Winslow Homer is considered one of the most accomplished and prolific illustrators of the nineteenth century. This exhibition features a selection of two dozen works from the Museum’s permanent collection, mostly engravings, as well as watercolors, one oil painting, and a rare etching. Also on display: The Late Drawings of Andy Warhol: 1973-1987 will feature 50 drawings, some of which are on view to the public for the very first time. (Through September 16)

El Anatsui: Five Decades @ The School, Kinderhook. The School celebrates its first year anniversary with a solo exhibition of works by El Anatsui spanning fifty years of his career, from compositions in painting, wood, and clay to the magnificent metal works for which he is renowned. (Through September 26)

Vincent Van Gogh and Nature @ The Clark, Williamstown. In Arles and Saint-Rémy, Vincent Van Gogh painted elemental landscapes in snow, wind, rain and sunshine, while making incisive images of insects, leaves and rocks that reflect his knowledge of illustrated natural history publications. This will be the first exhibition to explore this subject in depth, with some forty oil paintings and ten drawings that survey the artist’s developing relationship with his natural surroundings. Whistler’s Mother: Grey, Black, and White @ The Clark, Williamstown. An exhibition celebrating the iconic American painting as well as 25 additional works by James McNeill Whistler. (Through September 27)

The Crayon Miscellany @ Art Omi, Ghent. The 2015 Summer Group Exhibiton, curated by Julie Ryan includes works by Donald Baechler, Mary Heilmann, Michael Zahn, Pamela Fraser, Robert Montgomery, Tamuna Sirbiladze, Andreas Reiter Raabe, Ron Amstutz, Julie Ryan, Jason Stopa, John Monti, Andrew Huston, and Clare Grill. Three Centuries of American Art @ Williams College Museum of Art, Williamstown. Familiar favorites along with artwork new to WCMA’s collection provide a panoply of American creativity. Edward Hopper’s Morning in a City, back on view after its international tour, joins a colorful geometric gouache painting by Stuart Davis. Portrait paintings by John Smibert and Thomas Eakins coalesce with sculpture, decorative arts, and beloved works by Maurice Prendergast. Curator tour: Tuesday, February 24, 12noon. Side by Side; Shaker and Modern Design @ The Shaker Museum, New Lebanon. An exhibition examining the idea of modernism and its connection to ideals of utopian social reform through the lens of Shaker and modern furnishings, with works by iconic designers such as Jens Risom, Børge Mogensen, George Nakashima and Wharton Esherick shown alongside Shaker works from the nineteenth century. Modern Wings & Shaker Roots @ Hancock Shaker Village, Pittsfield. Contemporary artists Jon Brooks, Fritz Horstman, Christina LaSala and Dennis Maher explore the Shaker aesthetic in this exhibition of large-scale sculpture installed across the museum campus. (Through November 1)

Profound and Poignant @ Dyson Gallery, Schenectady. An exhibit that examines the lives of Union alumni and others from the College who were key witnesses and makers of history in the Civil War era, including two secretaries of state, military leaders, Medal of Honor recipients and the man who failed to prevent Lincoln’s assassination. (Through December 31)

Clifford Ross: Landscape Seen & Imagined @ MASS MoCA, North Adams. This major mid-career survey documents Clifford Ross’s longstanding project to reconcile realism and abstraction. The exhibition takes place throughout two buildings, six galleries and an exterior performing arts courtyard and includes a 24’ high x 114’ long photograph on raw wood that spans the length of MASS MoCA’s tallest gallery and an immersive installation of animated video on twelve separate 24’ high screens. A second phase of the exhibition, launching June 26, features an immersive outdoor video installation and an augmented reality experience accessible through the viewer’s smartphone.

Episodic Drift #8 @ Mandeville Gallery, Schenectady. A large-scale installation by Jennifer Williams, who explores the concept of the ladder as thought pattern, life path and problem solver. (Through March 2016)
