Screen Printing Nipper @ Albany Institute of History Art, Albany. Well, here’s one after our own hearts: in this first session of the Museum’s Art For All series, participants may bring a T-shirt and use a simple screen printing method to make a Nipper the RCA Dog design. Printing may also be done on paper if desired. Saturday, September 26, 10am -4:30pm. Free with museum admission.

Which Way @ Courthouse Gallery, Lake George. A gallery installation by Abraham Ferraro, who began this series of colorful, mailable sculptures made from packing materials and shipping labels in 2011. Since then the series has grown to over 100 pieces of sculpture, which are exhibited together as an installation. Each time the installation is shown, new pieces are added and mailed to the exhibition venue. Opening reception: Saturday, September 26, 4-6pm. (Through October 30)

El Anatsui: Five Decades @ The School, Kinderhook. The School celebrates its first year anniversary with a solo exhibition of works by El Anatsui spanning fifty years of his career, from compositions in painting, wood, and clay to the magnificent metal works for which he is renowned. Whistler’s Mother: Grey, Black, and White @ The Clark, Williamstown. An exhibition celebrating the iconic American painting as well as 25 additional works by James McNeill Whistler. (Through September 27)

The Crayon Miscellany @ Art Omi, Ghent. The 2015 Summer Group Exhibiton, curated by Julie Ryan includes works by Donald Baechler, Mary Heilmann, Michael Zahn, Pamela Fraser, Robert Montgomery, Tamuna Sirbiladze, Andreas Reiter Raabe, Ron Amstutz, Julie Ryan, Jason Stopa, John Monti, Andrew Huston, and Clare Grill. Ramon Lascano @ Hudson Opera House, Hudson. Now based in Tivoli, Argentinian artist Ramon Lascano uses an alchemist’s touch as he recycles old maps, paper and books rendered obsolete in the digital age to make intricate sculptures, wall-mounted pieces and literary creations. (Through September 27)

Liz Deschenes: Gallery 4.1.1 @ MASS MoCA, North Adams. Liz Deschenes takes the medium of photography itself and its conditions as the subject of her work. Described as “self-reflexive” or “concrete photography,” Deschenes’ practice makes visible the materials, properties, and chemical processes of photography rather than represent the external world.

The Making of the Hudson River School @ Albany Institute of History and Art. The Albany Institute of History and Art unveils its first online exhibition, which answers the frequently asked question, “What is the Hudson River School?”

Artists’ Choice: An Expanded Field of Photography @ MASS MoCA, North Adams. In conjunction with a solo exhibition of work specifically made for MASS MoCA, Liz Deschenes has curated a group exhibition featuring six artists whose work expands the field of photography: Dana Hoey, Miranda Lichtenstein, Craig Kalpakjian, Josh Tonsfeldt, Sara VanDerBeek and Randy West. Several of the featured artists make work that is considered photographic but is camera-less, while, for others, photography has laid the groundwork for the moving image or functions as a jumping-off point for sculptural investigations.

Things of This World Keeping Their Difficult Balance @ Sienna Patti Contemporary, Lenox. A solo exhibition of work by Bettina Speckner, whose jewelry creations based on tintypes examine the balance between the subjective and the objective, harnessing the inherent “historical” quality of found photographs to elicit a new experience of time. (Through October 4)

Three Centuries of American Art @ Williams College Museum of Art, Williamstown. Familiar favorites along with artwork new to WCMA’s collection provide a panoply of American creativity. Edward Hopper’s Morning in a City, back on view after its international tour, joins a colorful geometric gouache painting by Stuart Davis. Portrait paintings by John Smibert and Thomas Eakins coalesce with sculpture, decorative arts, and beloved works by Maurice Prendergast. Curator tour: Tuesday, February 24, 12noon. Richard Segalman: Recent Monotypes @ Inky Editions, Hudson. This inaugural exhibition at the recently-opened makerspace features 40 monotype prints from the past two decades. (Through October 4)

eat me alive so that I may see you from the inside @ MCLA Gallery 51, North Adams. A collaborative exhibit exploring re-imagined biology and speculative fictions between artists Maggie Nowinski, Alicia Renadette and Torsten Zenas Burns. (Through October 25)

Modern Wings & Shaker Roots @ Hancock Shaker Village, Pittsfield. Contemporary artists Jon Brooks, Fritz Horstman, Christina LaSala and Dennis Maher explore the Shaker aesthetic in this exhibition of large-scale sculpture installed across the museum campus. (Through November 1)

Ion Codrescu: Haiga Painting @ Mandeviklle Gallery, Schenectady. An exhibition, held in conjunction with Haiku North America, of Ion Codrescu’s haiga paintings, is a unique genre of art that combines painting, poetry (haiku), and calligraphy. From Concept to Console: Art and Aesthetics in Video Game Design @ Opalka Gallery, Albany. An exhibit focusing on the artist’s inspiration and process from early concept art to final in-game imagery, including works by the creators of Machinarium, Botanicula, Skylanders: SWAP Force, The Dream Machine, The Unfinished Swan, Transistor and Tengami. Profound and Poignant @ Dyson Gallery, Schenectady. An exhibit that examines the lives of Union alumni and others from the College who were key witnesses and makers of history in the Civil War era, including two secretaries of state, military leaders, Medal of Honor recipients and the man who failed to prevent Lincoln’s assassination. (Through December 31)

Transitional Interpretation: American Roots Music By Five Photographers @ The Folklife Gallery, Guest curator and photographer Andrzej Pilarczyk, along with four of his colleagues (Joseph Deuel, Enid Farber, Bryan Lasky and Lawrence White), provides a look at an insider’s view of the dramatic worlds of live music performance. (Through December 31)

Clifford Ross: Landscape Seen & Imagined @ MASS MoCA, North Adams. This major mid-career survey documents Clifford Ross’s longstanding project to reconcile realism and abstraction. The exhibition takes place throughout two buildings, six galleries and an exterior performing arts courtyard and includes a 24’ high x 114’ long photograph on raw wood that spans the length of MASS MoCA’s tallest gallery and an immersive installation of animated video on twelve separate 24’ high screens. A second phase of the exhibition, launching June 26, features an immersive outdoor video installation and an augmented reality experience accessible through the viewer’s smartphone.

Affinty Atlas @ The Tang, Saratoga Springs. An exhibition of works by contemporary artists that draws inspiration from the last work of the pioneering art historian Aby Warburg, who from 1925 to 1929 (the year of his death) undertook an ambitious cataloguing project — a visual compendium of his life’s research. Forgoing the customary art historical narrative, Warburg instead chose to illuminate his scholarly research through a constellation of some 2,000 images, which he pinned onto a series of room-filling black panels. (Through January 3, 2016)

Linear Element and Reframing Nature @ Art Omi, Ghent. Two new exhibitions at the the Charles B. Benenson Gallery and Visitors Center: Linear Elements is a two person show focusing on recent sculptures and drawings by Alain Kirili and James Siena. Opening alongside this exhibition is Reframing Nature, featuring the work of Allan Wexler. (Through January 3)

#schenectadydoesntsuck @ Mabee Farm, Rotterdam. A new exhibit exploring all things that make Schenectady awesome. (Through January 16, 2016)

David Austin: Wild Strawberries @ Esther Massry Gallery, Albany. Paintings by David Austin, inspired by the Ingmar Bergman film, Wild Strawberries, which tells the story of an older professor’s nostalgic visit back to where he spent his childhood, inspiring a parallel journey for the artist. Also on display: Paintings by Ginny Casey and Steve Pearson and sculpture by Patrick Cuffe. (Through February 21, 2015)

Episodic Drift #8 @ Mandeville Gallery, Schenectady. A large-scale installation by Jennifer Williams, who explores the concept of the ladder as thought pattern, life path and problem solver. (Through March 2016)
