If the word “ukulele” still conjures up images of hula girls or Tiny Tim, then you haven’t been paying much attention to the musical landscape lately.

Ukuleles are everywhere now…

And at the top of the contemporary uke heap stands Jake Shimabukuro, a bona fide virtuoso on the tiny four-stringed instrument. He’s made numerous Greater Nippertown appearances in recent years – including the Music Haven in Schenectady, The Egg in Albany and the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall in Troy – and last month he returned to Albany to make his Massry Center for the Arts concert debut in front of a full house.

And as usual, it was simply astonishing how much music he could coax out of that uke.
