LIVE: The Chronicles @ the Madison Theater, 11/20/15

Review and photographs by Rudy Lu
The Chronicles rocked the nearly full house at the Madison Theater in Albany at their recent concert.
Their horn led funky sound was electrified and modified with electronic effects on the saxophone and trombone by band leaders Jeff Nania and Bryan Brundige, respectively. Ace guitarist Justin Henricks alternated between rhythm and leads as needed. The danceable groove was kept by the always-in-the-pocket rhythm section of Dan Lawson and Andrae Surgick. Keyboard player Marcelle Johnson provided funky fills in between.
The highlight of the concert was Tara Merritt’s guest vocals on the Stevie Wonder warhorse “Superstition,” which had the crowd up off their seats and dancing.
Opening was Girl Blue with her alt-rock stylings accompanied by One Red Martian, who also played a set of their own – their first electric gig in three years – featuring mostly original material.
In between sets, DJ Truemaster Trimingham was spinning everything from contemporary sounds to music of the ’20s and ’30s.
It was quite an evening of enjoyable music.
