LIVE: Warren Haynes & the Ashes & Dust Band @ The Egg, 3/5/16

Photographs by Andrzej Pilarczyk
Guitarslinger Warren Haynes is used to playing big venues – he’s already slated upcoming Greater Nippertown performances this summer at Mountain Jam, Tanglewood and Bethel Woods Center for the Arts – so it came as no surprise that his recent concert at The Egg’s relatively intimate 982-seat Hart Theatre sold out weeks in advance.
It also came as no surprise that Haynes is just as comfortable in the more acoustic-oriented setting of his Ashes & Dust Band as he is with the Warren Haynes Band, Gov’t Mule, Phil Lesh & Friends or even a symphony orchestra. It just seems as though there’s nothing that the veteran guitar master can’t do… and do well.
Backed by drummer Jeff Sipe and the three-piece stringband ChessBoxer (featuring banjoist Matt Menefee, violinist Ross Holmes and upright bassist Royal Masat), Haynes dipped into the vast songbags of John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, Little Feat and even Radiohead, but he saved his most potent fretboard firepower for selections from his former employers, the Allman Brothers Band.
