25th Anniversary Exhibition @ Carrie Haddad Gallery, Hudson. The gallery’s anniversary exhibit marking 25 years in Hudson includes new paintings by Leigh Palmer, color field panels by Ginny Fox, sculpture by Leon Smith and photographs by Dale Goffigon. Artists’ reception: Saturday, May 28, 6-8pm. (Through July 10)

Summer 2016 Exhibition @ Art Omi, Ghent. This year’s annual summer exhibition includes new works in The Fields by Charley Friedman, Folkert de Jong, Freya Powell, Rob Fischer and Andreas Savva. Visitors will also get a special in-progress preview of Ward Shelley and Alex Schweder’s performative architecture piece, ReACTOR, which will open in the Omi Architecture Field later this summer. Also on display, in the Charles B. Benenson Gallery, is a solo exhibition of Charley Friedman’s indoor work featuring prints, drawings and mechanical sculpture of whirling beach balls, through July 24. Opening day celebration: Saturday, May 28, 1-4pm.

Explode Every Day: An Inquiry into the Phenomena of Wonder @ MASS MoCA, North Adams. New and existing works by 23 international artists, each touching on certain facets of wonder, including: the perceptual/visionary, the technological/scientific, the philosophical/meditative, time/cosmos, and illusion/fear. Opening reception: Saturday, May 28, 5-6:30pm.

The Graceful Nature of Dreams @ The Clement Art Gallery, Troy. Paintings and drawings by Jon Christopher Gernon. After 22 years as gallery director, custom framer and web guy, Jon will be leaving the gallery at the end of June to pursue other artistic endeavors with his wife Amanda in Richmond, VA. Opening reception: Friday, May 27, 6-9pm. (Through June 22)

Six Stops – Prints & Editions @ Inky Editions, Hudson. Work by 6 artists affiliated with the studio, in small print format, as a meditation on the significance of place in daily living, the imagination or in distant memory, featuring works by Tom Curran, Licha Jimenez, Kahn & Selesnick, Susan Myers, Beth Thielen and George Tsalikis. Fence Show 2016 @ The Arts Center, Troy. The annual exhibiton of works by Arts Center members, this year’s show is comprised of 382 pieces, including paintings, drawing, photography, fiber arts, stained glass and sculpture, as well as works by young artists in grades K-12. Artists’ reception: Friday, May 27, 5-9pm. (Through June 26)

Waiting: A Camera Phone Photography Show @ MCLA Gallery 51, North Adams. A collaborative effort between MCLA and Brigham Young University of Provo, Utah, this show will include hundreds of 4-inch by 4-inch color photographs gleaned from students and faculty from the art departments of both institutions, as well as members from the surrounding communities of each campus. Opening reception: Thursday, May 26, 5-7pm. (Through June 24)

Lumina @ Sienna Patti, Lenox. Jamie Bennett’s works of enamel jewelry examines the nature of mark making and how the mark is experienced—by maker and viewer, both physically and intellectually. (Through June 19)

Living on Earth: The Work of Robert Hite @ Hancock Shaker Village, Pittsfield. A solo show of sculpture and photography, co-presented this summer in a special collaboration by the Berkshire Museum and Hancock Shaker Village. The exhibition opens at Hancock Shaker Village with an artist’s talk and tour on Thursday, May 26, 4-6pm, and opens at Berkshire Museum on Thursday, June 30. (Through October 30)

Finding Raven: Art and Stories from the Northwest Coast @ Berkshire Museum, Pittsfield. Fantastic tales set in the oceans, streams and forests of the Pacific Northwest are accompanied by totem poles, carved masks and other ceremonial and utilitarian objects reflecting the traditions and artistry of the Haida, Tsimshian, Kwak’waka’wakw and Tlingit groups, among others. Opens Saturday, May 28. (Through October 30)

Greene @ Athens Cultural Center, Athens. The Center’s 13th Annual Members’ Exhibition features works in a wide variety of media on the theme of “Greene” – Greene County, the color green, or going green with recycling. (Through May 28)

Expression and Inspiration @ The Shirt Factory, Glens Falls. A group exhibition of over 50 works selected by Erin Coe, Director of The Hyde Collection. (Through May 28)

Happy Medium @ Hudson Opera House, Hudson. Recent works in ink and gouache on handmade abaca and cotton paper by master papermaker Ken Polinskie, whose work uses nature as a metaphor to represent complex predicaments of the human condition, and animals, plants, and figurative subjects to create a personal visual folklore that examines myth, passion, puns and self-reflection. Elevator Music 30: Critter & Guitari @ The Tang, Saratoga Springs. This installation in the Tang’s elevator will include a variety of small musical instruments by Critter & Guitari’s founders, Owen Osborn and Chris Kucinski, which visitors are invited to play. Also installed will be video synthesizers and monitors so that visitors will be able to see the sounds they make. (Through June 5)

Alma Thomas @ The Tang, Saratoga Springs. Vibrant, colorful paintings by Alma Woodsey Thomas, a black woman who grew up under the racial violence of Jim Crow, experiencing the Civil Rights Movement firsthand, and did not seriously pursue an artistic career until her retirement at age 69. (Through June 5)

Cristo & Jeanne-Claude: The Tom Golden Collection @ The Hyde Collection, Glens Falls. An exhibition of over 125 original drawings, sculptures, collages and photographs that traces the career of renowned artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, capturing the versatility, longevity and international scope of the duo’s extensive career. Tom Golden’s personal and professional relationship with the artists began in 1974, during public hearings for Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s project Running Fence. (Through June 26)

Give ‘Em Hell @ Time & Space Limited, Hudson. New stencil art paintings by Scout/Pines, née Brian Buono, who first got into street art while working in the screen-printing department at the Capital Region independent record label, Equal Vision. His pieces – painted with spray paint or house paint on reclaimed plywood or old metal – depict real-life people on the periphery: the have-nots, the overlooked, the marginalized. The Chatham-based artist then surreptitiously places his stencil-art paintings on abandoned buildings in distressed communities, where they usually disappear fast, unscrewed by collectors or lucky passers-by. (Through June 30)

Quietus @ BCB ART, Hudson. With his daughter as his muse, Richard Butler depicts lush expressionistic portraits of a pensive female, who serves as a cipher for himself. Butler was trained as a painter at the prestigious Epson School of Art & Design in London, but he is also known as the singer/songwriter for the acclaimed rock band, The Psychedelic Furs. (Through July 3)

Society After Revolution: Kian Kowrouzi @ Mandeville Gallery, Schenectady. Working in the medium of black and white digital photography, Union College senior Kian Nowrouzi captures human emotion and a diversity of culture within contemporary, post-revolutionary China and Cuba. (Through August 7)

Borrowed Light: Selections from the Jack Shear Collection @ The Tang, Saratoga Springs. An exhibition celebrating the major gift of over 500 photographs donated to the Tang by photographer, curator and collector Jack Shear and presenting a visual history of photography from its inception in the 1840s to the present day. (Through August 14)

Not Theories but Revelations: The Art and Science of Abbott Handerson Thayer @ Williams College Museum of Art, Williamstown. Works by Abbott Handerson Thayer, renowned twentieth century painter of ethereal angels, landscapes, and delicate flowers, was at the center of a raging debate around Darwin’s theories of evolution. As much a scientist as an artist, Thayer’s study of the visual world expressed itself in articles published in major scientific journals, an epistolary debate with Theodore Roosevelt, and in the development of the first prototype of military camouflage. (Through August 21)

Touch The Sky @ Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, Poughkeepsie. A multi-media exhibition that explores art related to astronomy featuring 50+ works by 18 artists: Laura Battle, Michael Benson, Matthew Brandt, Vija Celmins, Caleb Charland, Chris McCaw, Linda Connor, Teresita Fernández, Nancy Graves, Sharon Harper, Mishka Henner, David Malin, Lisa Oppenheim, Thomas Ruff, Lewis M. Rutherfurd, Kiki Smith, Michelle Stuart, Mungo Thomson and Penelope Umbrico. (Through August 21)

African Art Against the State @ Williams College Museum of Art, Williamstown. An exibition examining the history of activism, intervention and resistance that has characterized a great deal of African art-making from prehistory to the present, including works by Lalla Essaydi, David Goldblatt, Fathi Hassan, Fabrice Monteiro, Zwelethu Mthethwa, Zanele Muholi and Yinka Shonibare as well as sculptures by the Yoruba People and masks by the Igbo People. (Through August 28)

A Change of Place: Four Solo Exhibitions @ The School, Kinderhook. Working across painting, photography and sculpture, Pierre Dorion, Hayv Kahraman, Richard Mosse and Garnett Puett converge on themes of transformation, environment and remembrance.

Richard Nonas: The Man in the Empty Space @ MASS MoCA, North Adams. Nonas has created a major new sculptural work specifically for Building 5, and will also install a selection of existing sculpture. (Through September 5)

Masterworks: 225 Years of Collecting @ Albany Institute of History and Art, Albany. An exhibition commemorating the Institute’s 225th anniversary that highlights works from its diverse collections, including paintings, furniture, silver, ceramics, sculpture, prints and more. (Through September 4)

Both Sides Now: Lexa and Dan Walsh @ Williams College Museum of Art, Williamstown. The first-time creative collaboration by sibling artists Lexa and Dan Walsh. Dan, a minimalist abstract painter, and Lexa, a socially engaged artist, come together to merge their practices around a shared interest in perception and encounters among objects and people. (Through September 25)

Slippery Slope by Georgie Friedman @ Peter Irving Wold Center, Schenectady. A site-specific video installation piece by interdisciplinary artist Georgie Friedman. (Through November 30)

By the Patterns @ Mandeville Gallery, Schenectady. Kira Nam Greene, the fourth featured artist in the gallery’s Art Installation Series, has installed her patternist collages. (Through March 2017)
