LIVE: The Tani Tabbal Trio @ the Lace Mill, 5/22/16

Review and photographs by Rudy Lu
The Lace Mill is a combination artist studio/apartment complex in Kingston, similar in purpose and scope to the Albany Barn. It is also serving as a performance space.
Last month, the Tani Tabbal Trio performed a concert featuring music from their latest CD, Triptych. The avant-garde trio explored musical soundscapes and rhythms in a free-form setting. Tabbal’s polyrhythmic approach to music was complimented by the complex free blowing of the young saxophonist Adam Siegel and closely tuned-in bass playing of Michael Bisio.
The acoustics and visuals of the Mill’s Gallery E made for an adventurous Sunday afternoon of listening.
A surprise performance by Tony Avocato reciting poetry opened the performance accompanied the Trio improvising. To my knowledge, this was the first public performance by Avocato, who is primarily known as a digital visual artist. Hopefully, this will not be the last…
