Olivia’s Birds @ Athens Cultural Center, Athens. An exhibition of 50 watercolors by Olivia Bouler, who was 11 years when she began a fundraising effort for the Gulf oil spill by giving bird drawings to those who donated to wildlife recovery efforts. Olivia drew and donated 500 original drawings and thousands of limited edition prints throughout the summer of 2010. Today, she continues her environmental activism as an artist, writer, educator and speaker. Many of the artworks in this exhibition were included in her book Olivia’s Birds, published by Sterling Publishing Children’s Books. (Through June 28)

Give ‘Em Hell @ Time & Space Limited, Hudson. New stencil art paintings by Scout/Pines, née Brian Buono, who first got into street art while working in the screen-printing department at the Capital Region independent record label, Equal Vision. His pieces – painted with spray paint or house paint on reclaimed plywood or old metal – depict real-life people on the periphery: the have-nots, the overlooked, the marginalized. The Chatham-based artist then surreptitiously places his stencil-art paintings on abandoned buildings in distressed communities, where they usually disappear fast, unscrewed by collectors or lucky passers-by. Quietus @ BCB ART, Hudson. With his daughter as his muse, Richard Butler depicts lush expressionistic portraits of a pensive female, who serves as a cipher for himself. Butler was trained as a painter at the prestigious Epson School of Art & Design in London, but he is also known as the singer/songwriter for the acclaimed rock band, The Psychedelic Furs. As much a scientist as an artist, Thayer’s study of the visual world expressed itself in articles published in major scientific journals, an epistolary debate with Theodore Roosevelt, and in the development of the first prototype of military camouflage.
